A couple years ago on an Alaskan road trip I was curious about MPG and I calculated it between Delta Junction and Tok, which is a bit over 100 miles. Of course, there is no need to stop or slow down along this stretch and I did not. As I recall it was an exciting 17 mpg. My cruising speed was approximately the speed limit whatever it was there-probably 55-60. That's the best mpg by far I've ever seen. Stock LX 450 with ARB front bumper.
Perhaps this summer I will try again on another road trip to see if that can be matched. Otherwise my expectation is 13 mpg at best around Juneau town. We have no actual open highway in JNU.
I usually got 12.5-13 here, sometimes a little less. The most I ever remember seeing on a "normal" tank was 13.7 when I almost exclusively drove to Eaglecrest from the valley.

When I'd do my uninterrupted summer mpg test from safeway to echo cove & back, I was able to repeat 15.5, and I got 17.1 in 2wd once (front driveshaft out)

In my stock 98 4runner now, I'm getting 17-18.5, and we got almost 21 avg on our 2700mi up-north road trip last summer... which felt like a prius compared to the 80

Not apples to apples, but the best I've recorded is about 26mpg on a trip from Denver to Moab. 75mph most of the trip. Up and over the Rockies. I might have done a little better on other trips--I don't always calculate it.

1997 HDJ80 with 1HD-FT turbo diesel, 5-speed manual transmission. No roof rack, lift, or flares. 235/85R16 Toyo's on steel wheels.

Believe it or not... 3 years ago, in my 1997 80 with 220k, I did an overlanding trip starting in Texes, then to New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, and Colorado. I was loaded (see pic below), with gear, two dogs and a plump girlfriend. While in the Rockies, I got 17 mpg (I checked this repeatedly because I was convinced my math was incorrect) . Once I returned to Texas, 12-13 was the norm again, even with the rig unloaded.

Two good friends have told me they got the same mileage while in the Rockies. Can anyone explain?

Maybe the lower partial pressure of oxygen at altitude makes the engine initially run rich, then the ECU decreases fuel trims to compensate?

It's also a 15-20% reduction in aero drag vs sea level and 80's have a lot of frontal area.
