I am considering purchasing a FJ75 pickup and I don't have any experience with that series and am wondering about the driveability (highway cruising speed, availability of parts, etc.) I'm looking a a 90 with 4L gas, 5 speed in decent shape. Is this going to basically be like a newer FJ45?

Drive it before you buy it. It's like a FJ45 with a FJ60 dashboard and more HP. It is NOT like a Tundra with a solid axle and cooler looking from clip.

I have a '94 FZJ75. It is pretty bouncy without anything in the bed but very peppy with the 1FZ-F engine. Many have tamed it's rough ride with aftermarket springs and shocks; mine is still all OEM. If I were you I would hold out for a later model with the 4.5l engine. I drive mine around town and occasionally an hour or two round trip. I wouldn't want to drive it across country but it would make the trip without issue, just not sure if I would. The cab is not as small as an FJ45 pickup but it's still pretty small. I'm only 5'7" so not a big issue but if I was 6'+ it would be pretty uncomfortable.

I daily drive essentially a coil front end 79 series- which has the added cab area. 75 series with removable tops have shorter seat area. I am 5' 11" plus so I use that distance.
The truck drives very "upright" - so imagine a strong posture while seated.
I don't know rear spring length differences - but mine beat my kidneys (with newish seat bases and backs) and ideally parabolics would be better.
If an FJ, then pre 1990 and the suffering involved with that engine, If FZJ you joined the modern era somewhat.
I would still suggest buying the latest truck you can afford. Ideally a 1999+ with coils up front.

I think you'll have a better time in a 1FZ-F. Power is not bad for driving around. (A 99+ coil pack 1FZ with coil springs and the larger cab would be a huge upgrade but those are going to be very hard and expensive to find currently in the US)

I would get a 79 for the extra cab length. I drive my 75 from southern Georgia to Alaska, it was a tight ride. Now I can’t drive mine more than like 45min before my right knee starts hurting. Aftermarket cruise control would help since it would allow you to move your right leg around. I have a aftermarket cruise control but haven’t installed it yet, this winters project. A empty Ute will ride a bit rougher even with a good aftermarket suspension upgrade, would definitely recommend going to parabolic springs with a quality shocks for a ride improvement. As to daily it no problem as long as you do expect it to drive like a modern pickup.

Hello,

I am late to the party.

As mentioned above, you can think of it as an upgraded 45 Series.

Even with coils upfront, the ride is bouncy, especially if there is no load.

The 4-liter 3F engine's power is around 155 HP, enough for highway cruising. It is powerful but thirsty. I am not sure about parts, but chances are they are still available.

If you are 6 ft or taller, the cabin is cramped. 79 Series are a tad longer and more confortable.

Drive the truck and check for noises and wobbles at speed. Then there is the usual: rust, bondo, leaks...

Where does this 75 Series come from? South American trucks, particularly ex-work vehicles from Colombia and Venezuela, have lived hard lives with creative mechanics.

Watch very closely before you buy, and do not spend money you cannot afford to lose.

I appreciate all of the comments. They have been a big help and I think I will keep looking and try to find one with the 1FZ-F engine especially since I would anticipate some highway travel.

FZJ75 is good if you install the proper suspension and add some weight to the bed.

I am based in Saudi Arabia and Illinois. I can help you import FZJ75 or 79 “if the 79 is available”
Whether low mileage or patina, I always guarantee rust-free trucks.

Two samples that have been sold lately.

FZJ75 1997 was so lovely that we sold it locally. You are looking at a period-correct, original body with original stripes. No paint or anything like that. This one was about to be sold to a U.S. client but he changed his mind and I wish he did not after seeing what he got.

FZJ79 1999, this one we sold yesterday to a USA client. You are looking at an original truck with original stripes. Those stripes are only for the 1999/2000 fzj79. Details matter.

FYI Based on our experience and observations, the Cruisers that Meshal selects demonstrate that he maintains very high standards in what he offers to his clients. We have a real gem and are very happy with it.

Possibly of greater importance, was how Meshal conducted himself at every step. Defined himself with outstanding advocacy for us (bride & I) and clear honesty. If our savings would allow it, there is no question that we would turn to Meshal to find us more Cruisers.

Good luck in finding the right Cruiser for you.
