We were preparing for a great sunday for an off-road fest with the only TLCA chapter bros in Brazil...... Then something in the engine exploded.....

A cheap Bolivian glow plug has melted all away. I hope it has been blow to bits and pushed outside!

So the Land Cruiser had to stay at the petrol station locked it and enjoyed the rest of the day with the guys and girls... Had a great day. Look at my set on Flickr: Brazil 4x4 trails - a set on Flickr

Needless to say I am now shopping for new parts. The coupling they have here is like a strange looking Chinese copy from old tires. But the real challenge will be finding glow plugs.... Because they never ever heard of a 3B engine here. Almost all the local Land Cruisers, called Bandeirantes sport old Mercedes engines.... Hoping to get some glow plugs out of Paraguay.

Man, that's crazy about both the glowplug and the rag joint!

I'm sure if it came to it, we could ship you a set of glow plugs that's waiting to go into the 3B. I'd bet someone could get you the NSK number though, and you'd be able to just order those. i'd wager that the 3B glow plugs are common to SOMETHING else, and thus might be available locally in a good brand.

The picture of the black soot on the hood and the blown out glow plug is just amazing!

Is your cruiser a 24V version? if so those plugs may be the 12V ones and that's why it melted. I'd replace them all before piston damage occurs.
 
Ah, Brasilia. The city was designed and laid out like an airplane - the Gov't ministries and capitol are on the 'body of the aircraft' and the residential/commercial sectors where laid out on the 'wings'. I know the city very well. I lived and worked there for ~6 months.

Asa Norte - North Wing, Asa Sul - South Wing have great restuarants and nightlife. Then, there is the man-made lake which borders the city and, via a fantastic bridge, you reach the 'suburbs' Lago Sul - South Lake and Lago Norte - North Lake are located. Then, there is the Sudoeste district which was the newer commerical/residential district with good food and nightlife. I rented an apartment in Sudoeste and also stayed with friends in Lago Sul.

Very fond memories of my stay in Brasil. The beaches in the state of Bahia are epic. And, Fortaleza and Recife in the north are just awesome. Quero voltar agora!!!! Eu gusto muito do Brasil!

yep the Cruiser is 24 volt and the plugs are 14 volt. That is the superglow system.

I still have 2 reasonable good ones, and the other 2 I am going to weld shut. It should start easily with the temperatures around 30 - 40 degrees here. But the question is..... Did something fell into the engine or not? And could that damage something? How to check that and what to do?

I'm not the one you are waiting answers from... BUT... all those wires around the steering shaft make me nervous. Going around curvy Central-American roads once (left-right-left-right) I sheared some wires in two that settled into the steering shaft.

And wishful thinking and all... definitely pop the cylinder head and have a look-see... after all the work you did don't take any time savers _now_.

PS. Just want to add.... lucky it all happened before you got on the hard core... you still have good luck so be thankful for that!

You should get replacement glowplugs and have them sent to you via, say, FedEx.

Brazilian Bandeirantes got a Mercedes engine until early 1990s, and a Toyota 14B after that.

We have 3 different glow plugs for that motor in Oz, 6V, 9V and 12V. make sure that there aren't 3 different versions for the 24V vehicle. That may have been the problem or your relay isn't shutting off the power and they are staying on. A push button on the dash to bypass the timer may be a good option, pretty common here.

All the plugs were 14 volt. And the light in the dash stopped working some time ago, but after say 15 seconds I hear the relay switch off again and also I see the voltage pop back again, so I would say that the power isn't staying on.

Hoping my friends in Paraguay can source me some glowplugs this week. I'll keep you posted. Thanks for all the posts...

Now finding out why the glowbar keeps a 10 volt while running the engine? That should be zero right?

Any ideas why? Maybe it is time for the famous Wilson Switch? Or can things be mended easily...

Even after the engine starts, the secondary glow plug relay stays on untill the engine warms up some. This ensures a smooth idle while the engine is warming up.

Yes Daryl is spot on there with the super glow system, the secondry glow at a reduced voltage should stay on for 30 sec after start up...maybe your secondry was staying on and eventually over the 10,000km melted the plug.
I would change the pre heat relay as well just to be on the safe side I think it should be in the glove box???
 
I suspect your rag joint failed so badly because of poor alignment between your steering column and steering box Coen. (As I recall you had a lot of "body fitment trouble" following your recent "extensive oxyacetylene rust-repair work".)

And if you're fitting 11V plugs then I wouldn't advise connecting them up because I believe their lower voltage will mean they're much more likely to blow than the 14V plugs were. (I guess you could just use them to plug the holes while you're managing to start OK glow-less though.)

I just replaced the rag joint on mine, PO installed an after market one. I have no idea why mine failed either. I ended up replacing it with a OEM one from Toyota....it's a lot better than the one I replaced and feel better knowing it is better quality than the one I relplaced. I have no Power steering on mine so that does not help either.

:-) I think you are absolutely correct about the rag joint. That and the fact that the thing that I 5 minutes ago took out from the steering shaft was very rigid, and I believe the original part to be more flexible. The Brazilian part that I am putting in tomorrow will be made from the sidewall of a trucktire and is more flexible and if that ever fails, I can easily adapt a new one from another piece of tire.

On the 11 volt plugs; they would only be ment to plug the holes as to be movable as I await some 14 volt plugs. And I will only fit those if I have checked if something is fault of making those plugs explode or if it was just a faulty plug?

I will start checking the continuities of the different parts tomorrow. As it is now dark, and I don't like to work in the dark outside.

Any ideas as where to start? I was thinking on checking following:

1- Pre Heater Timer
2- No.1 Glow Plug Relay continuity and operation
3- No.2 Glow Plug Relay continuity and operation
4- Glow Plug Current Sensor continuity [do I have this?]
5- Glow Plug Resistor continuity
6- Water temperatur sensor
