Columbus Day Weekend to Moab

We'll leave Thursday am early but will be moving really slow... Probably leave Rio Rancho around 8:00, head up US 550, and get to KOA around 4:00 in the afternoon.

Last time I drove to Durango, ate at "Real Serious BBQ" and then went on to Moab. 6 hour trip.

Is the 1-40 to Gallup and up shorter? What's the draw? I'm up for an alternative but I always like stopping in Durango when I get the chance.

By the way, I'm still in and my buddy Ralph is coming also (elevated Heep, 35's, ARB Lockers). We're at the KOA Thursday night and will be leaving Monday am or midday.

I originally thought my whole family was coming but one of my wife's best friends since elementary is coming and she's pregnant. She hardly ever comes around so my crew may stay home to see her and not come:crybaby:, but I'll still be there.

It's 20 or 30 miles closer from the middle of Alb going through Bloomfield, but it's I-40 and US 491 (100 miles of two lane - the old 666) vs. US 550 and US 64 which has about 15 miles of semi urban 4 lane from Bloomfield to Farmington.

Another big trade off is there is less traffic up 491, but more fatalities. I won't go into the reasons why, but 491 is a two lane so more head-ons. US 550 and US 64 are 4 lanes all the way. Learning what I've learned working for the DOT, I'll take a 4 lane any day.

It boils down to personal preference and who can you comfortably caravan with.

550 to Durango it is. I didn't hear a compelling reason to skip "Serious Texas BBQ".

Tiptoe Update

Hey Guys. We've had a very sick little dog the last week and a half, but she's getting better, and as far as I know, we're still in. Hope she continues to improve.

I found a map put out by National Geographic called "Moab South" with trails and trail info yesterday at (where else!) REI, and it shows Tiptoe on it. While it crosses Behind the Rocks a time or two, it looks like it is more of a distinctively different trail than we had imagined. It follows the boundary to the Behind The Rocks Wilderness Area (??) (I don't have the map in front of me) more closely than the Behind the Rocks trail does. I'll bring the map with me.

Looking forward...

looks like the stockers are dwindling. i guess i'll have to lead a run to Pritchett Canyon.:flipoff2:

You can lead Pritchett Canyon, but...

I'm certainly not ready to follow you!

Williams' will be going over Ehill thursday. friday we will head to Moab taking the loop back to the regular entrance.

It looks like there will be room at the Devil's Kitchen campsites so I am thinking of doing the same schedule; leave early on Thursday morning, go over E-Hill on Thursday afternoon, camp at DK, and head to Moab on Friday morning.

Mike, Shawn, what route will you drive and when are you leaving?

Sent PM.

What time are you guys planning on leaving from the turnoff from US 191?

David,
I plan to tag along behind Jon and leave early... whenever he is planning to leave on Thursday morning. He posted that he is traveling West on I-40. I have not been that route before.

Mike,

I'm hoping to leave around +\-7am.

I am out...too much work.

Wolfes...

Even though I started packing last weekend I guess we're out too. I have an electrical gremlin in the ignition that could take some real sluething and I just don't think there'll be time before Friday to trace it.

i also plan to caravan w/ Jon and Mike. whatever route they take, i'm in. all you guys with time crunches, i still haven't finished the rear seat and seat belts for the kids or even put fluid in the new tcase, but i plan to stay up late at least one night to get it all done. this will prove to be a blast of a good time. probably the best time i've had in Moab (and that's saying something). i'd hate to see you miss it. :frown: i won't be able to do much 'till Tuesday myself. let's get it on! :grinpimp:

My friend Ralph has had a bit of car troubles this week. His tow vehicle has had some issues. His original plan was to pull his Jeep on a trailer.

Today we fixed the issue by fabricating some brackets to the front bumper of his Jeep. We then put a heavy duty tow bar onto the brackets so i can pull him to Moab. The sucker is a quick set-up and release but totally bomber.

Pretty cool how it all worked out. Ali was a great help and we were lucky he had just the right metal on hand that we needed, along with all his great tools to make the job easy.

Test drive went well and we are set to leave Thursday afternoon. We'll be in late so don't wait up for us.
