Well, guys, I'm in. Into MUD finally and in the Moab trip, even though I probably won't be doing much more than tiptoeing. Pleez' 'scuse the lack of signature/photo stuff as I'm a newbie in all of this. I'll figure it out eventually.

Looking forward to chasing skirt out behind the rocks :D. Gosh, who'd a known the HDC was so much fun!?! Good thing the wife isn't on mud yet too. I hope. Ha. We'll be in the pop-up.

Welcome Dave - glad to hear that you'll join us in Moab. You'll have a blast!

Not to worry if your truck is stock - you'll get all kinds of ideas for mods from this group. The real issue is figuring out how to pay for your "wish list."

This group is just too predictable. :grinpimp:

ouch... too painful. I could give all the reasons (or excuses) about where my money is going. Let's just say if I could afford the time and money to go at this point, I'd be going alone.

Which is something I still can't predict.

Yep - Welcome Dave (and the other new folks too)!

Glad to hear you guys are going to Moab!

Hey guys - been watching this post and I am really tempted to head out to Moab too, but I can't get there until Friday night or Saturday early AM. Will that be a problem, gotta teach a class on Friday. Also - fairly new to the game - got some mods to the FJ Cruiser, but have never done Moab trails. Well there be stuff for newbies? We are not 100% sure on a go for the weekend, but seriously considering it as our first outing with HD Cruisers.

I wouldn't consider myself a newbie but I drive a stock 60 so you could plan to run whatever I run. Apparently, a lot of the trails have easy and hard routes. Depending on who goes, there might be a couple options each day - easy and hard. I'm probably going, as long as I can figure out why my truck won't idle and get the leaking axle seal replaced. I might just bring a couple quarts of gear lube with me and not worry too much about the axle seal.

Hmmm.... If you have to pull the axle to replace the seal you might as well spring for an Aussie Locker while you're in there... $250...

there will be some others coming up on different days too, so that's no problem. we will be sure to have trails and options for stock trucks, so come on up! there's no wheeling like Moab.

Some people put it in the front, but generally in the rear - e.g. a Toyota factory electric locker goes in the rear diff, (unless you have two...)

In town it clicks turning corners and sometimes one gets a little bang, from not releasing easily - I'm not sure of the dynamics of that... You can get a little torque steer sometimes, but that's almost imperceptible. Not really any "messing" with steering response, per se. All those are features of any automatic locker - as far as I know.

put it in the front you never know it's there on the road. Put it in the back and you do. That pull up front works much better than pushing from the rear in many cases, but then you are putting all that stress on the suckfields. Rear axles take it much better.

Very tempting. If I'm only doing one axle at a time, would it be better in the front or rear? How would that mess with my steering response, having the cogging feature going nuts when turning on the city streets and in parking lots?

Oh yeah. On road, the front hubs are disengaged and the T-case is in 2-HI so there's nothing going on. Off road, the tires can slip in the dirt. So the most likely place I'd notice it would be tight turns on grippy rocks, right?

we should probably start a new thread for this, but i'll add to it here too.
in the front, an auto locker will destoy your turning radius. not a problem if you don't mind making 6 point turns frequently. so i have really enjoyed having selectable (ARB) in my front now. in the rear, i never really noticed my locker w/ stock engine. in parking lots and tight turns the inside tire would chirp, and the once in a while loud bang(only happened twice). that's about it. you can get used to any quirks w/ a rear locker by changing your driving style slightly, which happens very quickly. i would slap it in the rear and not worry about it. in fact, with my big engine now, i still don't notice the Detroit rear locker at all when on the street (and yes i do drive occassionally on pavement:flipoff2:)

Hey guys,

Just booked a tent campsite at the KOA. I'm driving up on Thursday (4th) and leaving Monday (8th). Bringing the whole crew, dogs and all. Let's work on the schedule for the runs.

what?! when i called, they said i didn't need a reservation for a tent site. i even mentioned the group name. i guess i'll have to call again. did you talk to a guy or a gal? i talked to a guy, maybe he is clueless.

With the dogs they will put you near the dog area up front. Maybe that's why you needed a reservation...
