Thinking a little about getting a "small" group together for a cold weather cullowhee trip. I'm sure there will a mixture of weather systems ranging from just plain F#$King cold, to snowing, to raining, to pleasant weather. If we have a small group, we could tuck into a sheltered camp sight off of the balds, or even camp somewhere completely different.

Date of trip is to be worked out, but tenatively, we could aim for mid Feb.?

I would like to hear from you if you are interested in going and what you would like to get out of the trip.

I would be very interested. I could do a sat night or maybe even a two nighter depending on the weekend... and maybe the weather?

Might bring the kid if it all works out.

I'd be down for that, maybe check out that grouse road you've been talking about.

Grouse hunting and wheeling. What could be better!!!

well it is funny that you mention a feb. cullowhee trip but that is what is on the books for UC that month :D

although I think the general plan was to stay in a house in Cullowhee and ride the trails during the day......

personally I would rather camp, so I am in for this trip either way, I couldn't think of anything better than wheeling in the snow

.........as for what I would like to get out of the trip, I'd be up for exploring some of those trails at the 4-way stop that lead to wet-camp gap or as Andy said hunting and wheeling would be cool.........really don't care just love Cullowhee

*and on a side note, from what I understand from talking with turkeypen's wife who works for the FS, the new law that was passed last year (can't remember the name) and will be in effect with in the next couple aims at closing those trails we ride at cullowhee, she suggested to me we get some kind of group letter and send it to the appropriate congressman and so on........... :frown:

What's a Cullowhee?

Do I get to shoot stuff too? Gunpowder and burning rubber all in the same day?
HOO-AAHH.

cullowhee is a town in western north carolina........... the area we ride in is adjacent, it is basically a endless miles of old logging trails, that makes for great expedition type wheeling plus the scenery is unbeatable here on the east coast

bill here is a link with some pics: https://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?t=116508

I have a free cabin only a couple miles from the trails. It even has a trail off the driveway that is supposed to be really long.

I'd really like to look into that trail marshall.................. also Alex (concrete) has mentioned other trails in the area besides caney fork, it'd be nice to document the trails in the area, especially since my folks new home is about 20 mins away :D

i'd be up for a ride a long if my cruiser is still sick. If not, I may be up for a drive along, unless it's rediculously cold, cause I don't have a top.. haha. OH goodness. Should be a fun trip.

ShockSnapper in snow!!! this should be fun. id be game. Horsehead-- ill probably have a seat for you and if your in HP you can ride up with us too; or catch a ride up from SC.

Stacy and I might be up for something like that. After camping at URE last weekend, I cabin sounds amazing. Did I mention that it was cold out there? Our heater crapped out halfway through the night. If you guys nail down a day I'll see what we can do.

When i posted this, i had no idea that the UC group was planning a cold weather trip. So, i will politely step back and just let the UC trail ride take precedence.

However, :) .......i still may be up for a SMALL group (thinking 4 rigs) to go on a more hardcore trip during the winter. I will talk with a few of you via PM and see what we can work out.

Sure is funny you mention that...

I am taking a group from Erskine in Jan. I am hoping to be up there to scout out Dec 18th and 19th. (This Monday and Tuesday.) But I am having a few issues trying to get enough people to go up with me for the scouting trip.

Where was it that we need to check the weather? (Somewhere else not UCPRIVATE.)

Alex, didn't mean to over run your trip  I have a feeling most of our group will want to stay in the cabin marshall has...... so maybe a small and brave group of us can do a more hardcore camping trip that same weekend.

No worries!

I don't want to offend anyone, but on a trip like that i just don't think a large group would be fun. We would need to keep it small so we could make easy decisions and minimize breakage. I know that it will be slick and muddy, perhaps even icy/snowy. Plus, if the weather is bad we will be able to squeeze all of us into a small sheltered camp site.

Another thing i would like to explore if someone with us has a GPS. I was told by the local fellers, that at the top of speedwell road, there is a trail that links to Franklin, NC. I know where the supposide "trail head" was, and i've actually started down it once, but turned around. Might be fun to see where we end up.

I'm game. Either way. Or both. But if they're both on the same weekend I'm for the hut.
I have a handheld GPS. Also handheld radio. I will buy chains. Any recommendations?
I have camping gear including propane stoves and several size tents. And chainsaws. And guns (someone mentioned grouse.) And a $27.5K portable 400W generator/stereo/lighting array with a seasoned skid plate.
I'm dogless at the moment but love 'em. If someone brings one and we camp it can sleep with me.
I have long weekends, i.e. Fri thru Mon on Jan 28 and Mar 4. If it's one of those I can go early for prep or stay late for clean-up.
I don't think I have any scheduled commitments with the old lady until June but I'll deal with that when dates are nominated.
