Did alot of reading and have come to the conclusion that my clutch cylinder is in need of rebuild or replacel. Ok for the past 2 weeks, i've realized that when i want to put my rig in gear sometimes it is really stiff. I usually let go of the clutch and push it back in then it goes into gear. Sometime at a traffic light, i push the clutch down all the way try to shift into first with no problems, but as i am going into gear i feel the rig nudge forward a little bit. Now today when i got home after alot of driving i realized that there was some fluid on my mats and saw that it was leaking from the fire wall out of the clutch pedal hole. What i want to know is, do i need a new clutch slave cylinder, it appears to be original, it says aisan on it. Also, don't know if this has anything to do with it, but i have to keep adding fluid to my brake master cylinder every few days, braks pull to the right and i'm thinking my front left cylinder is leaking. Do the clutch and brake cylinder work together? Where is the best place to buy a new one or a rebuild kit?

Yes replace slave it's not expensive and if your bleeding the clutch system better to do it once.

Brakes and clutch systems are independant of each other.

Best is OEM. Call CDan.

do both..

I know everyone says that i need to replace both, but the leak is so nominal, and the slave cylinder looks fine, could i just replace the slave and rebuild the master? Where can i get master rebuild kits from?

You can do anything you want.

And it might work out..

Or, it might not..

If its leaking at your firewall, its your master cylinder, not your slave. Just incase you wanted to buy just what was troubleing you I wouldn't want you to get the wrong part. I eneded up buying the master, slave, and new hard line for mine.

As for the brakes, they should run off it's own system. If your left front cylinder is leaking, thats why you need to add fluid every few days; thats also, most likely, your right brakes are working better because they have more pressure ;)

I've replaced my master lately, even tho i bought the salve kit i haven't replaced it has it is not leaking. But at least i have it handy.

Do both at the same time. If you only do one right now, you'll end up doing the other probably within the year. That's what happened on my father-in-law's 71. Replaced the master...about $40, then 1 year later, replaced the slave....another $40. Now we probably need to replace the lines between the two. Just spend the money and get the kit for both. Half ass it now and it will bite you later.

Do not waste your time with rebuilds. Spend the extra 20 or 30 bucks and do it right. Or don't do anything, put up with the mess and expense of the fluid and there will be people like me that bitch at you when you break down on the trail for being a cheap bastard.

I hope you didn't buy a 40 thinking it wouldn't cost much to keep it running.

I doubt Jon from NC will respond, he's not been on here for 8 yrs. Ive not read thru this thread but can guess whats been said. Ive tried aftermarket hydraulic parts on my 40 in the past and they dont seem to last. You want to buy Aisan or stk Toyota parts. I know they are more expensive but worth it. Clutch masters and slaves fail unexpectedly, youll either have to learn to drive without a clutch or carry spare parts and brake fluid.
I usually carry spares, especially on the trail, but can drive without a clutch too.
