I cannot help you, but for those who can, they'll need to know FJ what. The FJ Cruiser was not made in 1974. FJ40? FJ45? FJ55?

Thanks Hobbes, still learning a lot about these. Appreciate the info. I will correct it ASAP.

Looking at the switch from the back as shown in your pic.

Top Left and Bottom Left are the Park Light switch contacts. Top Left goes to +12V. Bottom Left out to all Park Lights.

Top Right and Bottom Right are the Head Light switch contacts. Top right to +12V. Bottom Right to dimmer switch then out to headlights.

Thanks for the speedy reply. Much appreciated. I've seen others with 5 prongs with one going to gauge lights. That's where I was tying it into this thread to see if I was mistaken on the contacts and whether or not one went to the gauge lights.

Here is an addition to the thread. If I remember this was one of the missing years that was added later into the thread. My housings were shot but here is a look at the cluster.

Late 73 on has exactly what you describe, a separate set of contacts for the Meter Lights. Early 73/72 the Meter Light wire is spliced into the front Park Light circuit so turns on with them.

Another question for you due to my wiring experience being limited to none. My harness has a LEFT TAIL PARK wire, and a LEFT FRONT PARK wire. How do I account for both off of the one connector (being the bottom left on the picture)?

That my friend is a trade secret!

Seriously, inside the harness that Mr. Toyota designed, are many splices. The Park Light circuit has several of these. You will have to figure out how to do harness splices in order to build a harness from scratch.

The OEM schematic shows all the splices, but does NOT show where they are located. Use the schematic to determine what splices you need, then determine the best place inside the harness to make them.

I figured there would be. A few of those secrets! Thanks for the insight.

Question for ya?

My harness in regards to my headlight switch (my guess)

-???? (Top left)
-park lights (bottom left)
-headlight power (top right)
-dimmer (bottom right)

The headlight power and dimmer are both direct wires into my fuse box.

There is also a dimmer switch that Looks to go into my column.

Park lights are the only one I'm SURE of. I'm using an EZ wire system. Im sure this might take a little trial and error. Any insight would be great.

Found the missing gauge cluster 9/72 - 9/73

I was always wondering why I couldn't find pictures of a '72 - '73 cluster.
Thanks to Mud member Sproggy we found it.
The front looks like a 3rd gen. cluster but the back looks like a 2nd gen. cluster.
Clearly this was the change over model from Sept. 1972 till Sept. 1973.
The cluster is technically a 3rd gen. cluster. Front and internals are identical to the 3rd gen. cluster.
The back side is a metal housing (2nd gen. style) but without the PCB (Printed Circuit Board) from the 3rd gen. clusters.

Have a look......

Note: the red arrow points to the ground terminal for the VR inside the Fuel gauge.

What is the connection in the center for that has the black housing around it? I have this gauge but can't find the wiring diagram for it and don't know what that connection is for. Thanks for any help!

That "thing" above the speedo with the 2 wires is the VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) and is hooked up to your desmog stuff.

Rudi

Thanks, Rudi. How about the connection on the bottom right in this picture? Is that related to the speedo as well? What is it's function? Thanks for any help.

That's a cable/wire clamp. Metal strip covered with plastic insulator.
The black and white wire should be in there.

When I took apart my stuck odometer it went a little quick so I had to remove my other to get it back in order. Then I realised that the bar on the bottom were in different locations it might not be very big difference but one is at 28 minutes on a clock and the other on 24, see pic. Is that a way to adjust the needle? There is a big difference in the acting of the needles one of them goes back with a bang when I let them free from a high speed while the other goes back more damped.

Good question, but I don't have the answer. Maybe somebody else knows?

Rudi

I am far from even beginning to make sense of anything electronic. Does anyone know if there's someone that will receive a cluster and refurb it? I have a 12/74, all stock. All gauges work except the fuel gauge. I've replaced the sender recently, so that's not the issue. I also replaced the connectors, with the exception of where the fuel sender wire hooks up to the back of the cluster. I'm going to pull the cluster and clean up as much of the connections as possible. If that doesn't work, anyone care to point me in the direction of someone who knows what they'r doing?
