Cloth or Leather seats

I have the best of both worlds, manual seats with leather. Tons lighter with new leather. Super comfy and easy to clean. What's not to like...:D

What leather covers did you use for the manual seats? I have some manual seats that I would like to put leather on as well

I'll throw in a plug for wet okole seat covers. I ordered a set to install over my cracked leather LX450 seats. They look great and feel fantastic. They are custom made and fit accordingly - not like the cheaper "semi custom" covers. Cool in the summer, warm in the winter, a little extra cushion and being wetsuit material they handle pretty much anything you throw at them and clean up easily with wetsuit soap. Only downside is that they add a little bit of thickness to the seats which makes folding the rear row forward with the driver's seat all the way back problematic.

They weren't cheap but I'm very happy with them.

I just received my leather samples from LSeat.com. Yes I’ve been warned that they take a long time to ship. It took about a week to get the sample though. I’m ordering leathers for the front pass and driver seat of my 100. Colors are real close to stock but again I’ve been warned that colors may not match the samples.

For $300 bucks I’m giving it a shot, going with the Ecru white.

thumbs up for leather from lseat...replaced lx fronts...color was pretty much spot on but not as smooth as the original...fit was right on and it is a project to replace correctly...find what you like cause you don’t want to do it twice

I wish the textures weren’t so trex skin like

I just installed my LSeat.com leather replacement seat covers. I have no regrets other than the headrest skins seem a little too big. The leather is a little rough like you say, it feels like BMW stock material. Over time it should smooth out a little. I had a local shop do the fronts and center console for $200. Although the center console material was included, it was too big. I’d recommend buying some additional material for future repairs or in my case I used it to have the center console covered.

...And yes I drove using a tommy chair for a couple days.

...the only thing I might add is that after peeking my head into literally thousands of cars over the decades, fabric retains odor more. Smelliest cars I have been in had fabric.

With that said, I actually pine for a 80 with factory fabric. There seems to be if I remember two specs on factory fabric, I might be mistaken but one spec of fabric had a woven look whereas the second more rare spec had a “Cressida” high-end almost velour (lol) look to it. I think the woven look is not only more common but also holds up better.

I’m sure it looks and feels way better than two decade old skin. Mission accomplished.

My ‘18 BMW leather feels nothing like that. Maybe older gens? I had an 80 from the same vendor so speaking from irl experience. I just wish there was a kit with better texture that also retains that factory quilt.

Can you say more about "cool in the summer" on these?
It's hard to believe, since it is closed cell neoprene foam - completely air-tight and water proof.
Sure seems like it would be sweaty on the seat and back on a hot day.
Actually wearing a wet suit out of water is intolerable in short order.

You need air flow and quick drying. That is why the stock cloth is sweet. Under a magnifying glass it's like liitle tufts of cloth woven into a herringbone pattern.

One option for worn cloth seats - use the cloth and materials from the 3rd row seats. The 3rd row materials are usually in excellent condition.

Fresh OEM foam covered in materials from 3rd row:

– Sheep hide is a ‘breathable’ natural material.

– Creates a multi-layered, airy texture between the body and the seat. Thanks to this feature, it prevents sweating and keeps warm in winter and cool in summer.

– Thanks to its ability to absorb moisture, it does not create a wet feeling even on long flights. It stays dry and does not cause odor.

– While synthetic tissues can cause allergies, processed natural wool is hypoallergenic.

– It is resistant to fire and high temperature compared to synthetic materials. The high fire resistance of sheepskin also results from the high nitrogen and water content in its natural structure. Therefore, it requires higher oxygen levels in the surrounding environment for the sheepskin to burn, which means most importantly it is hard to burn.

I know this is a old thread, but I prefer leather or vinyl, or pleather. The main reason is such materials are easiest to clean. Sometimes I sit at a doctor office or hospital or a public place. What kind of bacteria and germs do I sit on at such places I don't know. At the end of the day I take a damp rag with some soap and can wipe the seats clean. In addition while out camping I get a bit dirty. If I'm doing a chore of some sort I also tend to get dirty or maybe i spill somethingon the seats. Simply wipe the leather seats with a damp soapy rag and they are like new. Cloth wouldn't last me a month before they started looking discolored from dirt and whatnot.

Vinyl cleans up just as easy as leather probably easier !!
Leather is nice for sure.
That being said I’m very happy with my cloth seats, I don’t have a bunch of sick people setting in my Rig so I’m not worried about germs.
Over 25 years old and still look great.

Older Toyota cloth seats are very durable I agree. Leather or vinyl all clean up the same way. Just wipe them down. The germs don't have to be from other people sitting in your truck, it can be from you sitting in a restaurant or somewhere at the airport etc where someone else sat before you and then you sit their, then that fecal matter sweat or germs are carried from your back side to where you then sit in your truck. Also as you sit on a seat you'll naturally sweat a bit, body juices soaks into cloth, and then into the foam where it stays. I work on my own truck, or ill work on someone elses stuff. Sometimes I'll crawl under my truck to check something, or I'll get dirty from being in the woods. I also go to a lot of public places where i sit where others sat. But it all just gets the surface of the vinyl/leather dirty. I just wipe it off-takes 20 seconds. I'm in these situations a lot though, so it's a concern for me anyway.

All valid points
Life's to short for me to be worried about all that !!

@White Stripe ....you nasty haha

I have always felt that cloth seats didn't encourage sweat as much as leather. However suspending mesh with no foam would be ideal.
