Also got some sliders in the works... Went and talked with the local steel house (they know me pretty well in there now), and the design will be similar to the Metal Tech sliders except they will match the angle of the tub and they will be half the price...about 150 bucks total for the material and 4 bends...Cant wait to see how these come out.:bounce::bounce2:
Since I dont have a bender YET, I had to go to them to do it.:bang:

Rear end in ALMOST back in and done...
Called Driveline service of Carson City (the guy who does my gear and drive shaft work) and Im gonna have him install a spacer in lieu of the crush sleeve that is currently in there and swap out the new flange for the drive shaft bolt pattern I have. So I need to do that before I can re assemble the rear end.

Sure would be sweet if you could convert the rear axle to a full floater.

This set up will be just fine for the time being.
If later down the road I find I need something different, Ill deal with it then. For now...just wanna get it up and running and WHEELING!
Its not AS fun when you have nothing to wheel in the mean time.:crybaby:

Ya know....YOU ARE RIGHT!!!!

Id be wheeling when I should be working! didnt think about that.
Aside from that, there are a great many things around the house that are getting neglected till this rig is done as well....
My wife has been SOOOOOO understanding of this little endeavor.

THANK GOD!

However, Its gotta get done ASAP or her patience could run out VERY QUICKLY!

I am in the process of trying to set up the same axels and springs that you have in the rear. I was wondering what your shackle angle is with the suspension loaded and the distance from center of spring hanger to center of shackle hanger. I am working with a bare frame so its hard to put the vehicles weight on the suspension to figure out angles. Thanks for any help you could give.

Built my sliders today!:bounce::bounce2:
Love em! Still gotta figure the out rigger dimensions for the PS and add some gussets, but....
DS is done!

Hey bro...
Not sure of the hanger to hanger dimension, but I think that will be dictated by the springs you use. Older springs will have less arch and thus screw the dimension from one to another. I can get it for you tomorrow if you still want it.
As for the shackle angle, I set them at 30 deg with SOME weight in the cargo area. What I did to find that, was set the shackle hanger where I wanted it and tacked it in, and put a clamp on the spring hanger and kicked the (unloaded/ unsupported) axle forward till the shackle was at 10 deg. When I jacked up the axle with the weight of the rig I hit the 30 deg. mark that I wanted. It took a few times of doing this, but I got it. My last rig I built I set the shackle at around 30 Deg and I liked it. With spring settle and additional weight I figure Ill end up around 35 deg or so.

HTH!

Looking good keith. Like the sliders. I haven't turned a wrench on mine since I've got it on the road even though I have some stuff I need to do on it!!!

Nick

Thanks Nick.
I cant wait to get to that point.
How are you enjoying it!?!?!

I make up excuses to drive it! "Oh, I need to run to the store to get some sock organizers. Oh, I need to drive by and see if the construction workers made any progress on a random road that I'd never drive down anyway!" I love driving it around. I've had SO many people stop and talk to me about it. Most think its a Jeep and I have to kindly slap them in the face and show them the "TOYOTA" that is written all over it! Oh well I enjoy educating the masses. The best part is my daughter loves to ride it in, even when its hotter than hell here like it has been. She doesn't care that it's 108* w/ 75% humidity, she just wants to ride in the "landchrusher" as she says!

Its worth all the work and then some!

HAHAHA! Its funny the interest these old rigs generate. When I had the 62, I got more stares and comments when out and about.
Even sitting in the garage in pieces most people think the 40 is a jeep. I have to do the same as you.
Glad to hear that its running well and youre enjoying it. Im jealous. I figure Im a little more than half way there....well, maybe a bit more, but still a ways to go.

I got "smart" after coughing up RUST from refurbishing of the rear spring packs...

That's a funny look'n paper hat you have there Keith :D

The past 15-years or so I've gotten a little smarter about hearing, eye and lung protection; must have something to do with getting older than I thought I would :). All three go on anytime the grinder gets used as well as any wood working project, extended welding, etc. Amazing how much crud those filters grab when using the angle grinder...outdoors even!
