Mace and I had discussed it off line...It was a fleeting thought.
Im gonna run the leafs for the time being. I know how and what to do with em. If I feel the need AND OR, I HAVE TO Ill look harder at it. However, I have enough work on my plate, that I just wanna get her running with the new drive train and wheel her.
There is TONS of money to spend just getting her to a point where I can use it. So, that is where Im at on that subject.

Lately Ive only been able to get an hour here and there.
I got the last tub bolt free at the front! So Im stoked about that.
Then I directed my attention to the rear of the rig and the bolts at the END of the tub...UGH!
2LBS of dirt SOCKED in to each of the rear blinker sockets...
HOLY CRAP! When I build, I take GREAT CARE in making sure things are as CLEAN AS POSSIBLE, to the point that Im OCD. I do this, so later on down the road they DONT end up like this.... I realize that the 2nd pic is washed out, but you can see all the CRAP that had accumulated back there on the floor.

Here is a shot of the dash with everything cleared out...
Kind cool. I like these before shots to see the progress later on down the road.

I see HF sockets :D

Take your rear FJ62 springs and use them on the back of the rig. Mount the shackle hanger verticaly on the back of your rear bumper.

You can get a 104ish WB fairly easily.

that is until you link it ;)

Don't encourage him, 62 leafs are only delaying the inevitable.

YEAH MAAAAAAAN! I like the HF stuff. Use the impact wrench sockets and have never had any issues.
Im not quite understanding the shackle hanger VERTICALLY on the bumper?!
Wait...never mind! I think that I just got it.

SOOOOO, havent made ANY progress on the 40 (still dont have a name for it yet...thinking about the BRUISE, cuz she's all banged up. I had a camping obligation with the family last weekend which was a lot of fun, but also a 3 ring circus. Wife, me, 2 daughters, their 2 boyz (5 and 7) and the other daughters 9mo old baby).
Then, a friend here locally asked me to chop a set of doors for him in the beginning of summer...I spent a lot of time STARING at them thinking about the best approach to do it how he wanted them. So Ive been spending most of my spare garage time doing those. So, since they are 40 doors, Ill post up the progress pics on those.

Thick doors
chopped
internal panel removed and re skinned with 18g
Gusseted for stability in the middle (youll see the plug welds)
NO interior latch handle (he didnt want it)
Pull handle
Had to make an access panel for the latch
I capped with 1x3 square stock (not sure of the gauge)
\
BTW, Im not a big fan of body work. Im not very good at it, it takes me a LOOOOONG time to make it "right". Just havent found a really good technique for welding that thin ga stuff. Im using my 220v Hobart 176 which is a bit too hot even on the lowest setting to be really productive.

Here's a few more with MOST all the welds done on the BIG side. Still have to weld in the ends that will require some fancy capping. He wants the AFT end of the door to be somewhat beveled/ rounded so its not dangerous. IIRC, RustyTLC had the same request when I did his as well.

That re skin of solid sheet metal looks better than I thought it would. I thought it might look too plain, but it turned out pretty good. I might do the same with mine. It was EASY to do as well. He is gonna have it professionally prepped and painted to cover my hack work.
Since Ill be very busy the next few weeks...45 run, Granny Hansen from Chicago is coming in to town...Ill keep this thread alive with odds and ends that have been happening.

Those doors look awesome. I will definitely be referring back to this thread when I go to do mine sometime in the far future.

.023 welding wire?

If not, get some and you will be much happier with welding sheetmetal

I'm thinking you should start planning a rear bumper with tire/gas can carrier for your 40. Since your truck is mostly disassembled I'll loan you mine to practice on. :grinpimp:

JK Fordyce is probably the last trip of the summer for me so I'll have all winter to build a bumper. Speaking of Fordyce, are we going to finish the Blotch body mods on that trip?

HMMMM...no, Ive been running the .030 Lincoln flux core wire.
Might have to buy a lil spool of that .023 for the other door.

Thanks for the tip Mace!

Ive been considering that along with Maces suggestion on setting the shackle hanger on the rear bumper to stretch the WB...
Im thinking that a rear bumper on the 40 will be EASY, depending on how youll wanna affix the bumper to the frame. I like that idea of running through bolts to the existing bolts. Welding the swingouts will be a snap. Just gotta get the spindles, latch and struts (if you want em). Making a card board template of the hole layout like you were talking about would be EXTREMELY USEFUL.

Im gonna have to see where I stand with Fordyce. If I go, I wont be so worried about keeping the body straight anymore.:grinpimp:
It is a Friday leave, or Sat. leave? I dont have much PTO available right now...:crybaby:

Thanks brotha!
The guy Im doing them for wanted the steel skin on the interior...I didnt think that Id like it, but I really dig how it came out. It is ROCK SOLID all welded up. I think that center support that I welded in make a HUGE difference in structure. Using the 1x3 square tube for the caps was also a great way to go as well. I cut em in half length wise, set em in the door hole (place that needed to be capped...) and left em 3/16 in proud and welded em in. This allowed for straighter panels, and some re enforcement at the top. It also was MUCH EASIER to weld in and also do the clean up grinding.
I got 98% of it finished last night. Just gotta do some quilt work at the back end of the door around the latch area.

go buy a bottle of gas for your welder, sheet metal will be sooo much easier..

I have a piece of masonite I'll use to make a template, that will hold up for longer than cardboard. You know you'll be making more FJ40 bumpers once you do the first one right? :grinpimp:

The Fordyce Trail head is just past the Cisco Grove exit on I-80. I'm thinking about camping at Eagle Lake Friday with :princess:*. It's close enough you could come up after work if you want. The 'Fishal meet time is Saturday AM.

*It should be fun teaching her to hook up the trailer and tow it with the 100.

Been watching your build. Have you decided what you are going to do as far as wiring harness? I'm at that stage now and am looking at putting in a new harness and being done w/ it. EZ seems to be more of my price range as well as the Gem Street Rods. I'll be watching to see which way you decide to go.

Nick,
Im on the verge of trying to do the Vortec harness myself (stock, uncut harness). I have a friend who is an electrical engineer whom I may recruit to help. Here, you can get the whole harness including all the emissions crap for 150 bucks out at the auto wreckers. As for the stock 40 harness...Its gone. Im gonna do the EZ wire/ some variation as recommended earlier on here.
Where are you at with yours?
