LC center section will not fit into a mini rearend. However, the mini rear axle tubes are the same OD as the cruiser axle ID. So you can slip fit them into a cruiser housing that has had it's tubes cut off.

Woody's buildup that is basicaly what you are contemplating doing

A d300 witha 4:1 kit in it may be the best option

You can see the centered LC rear axle in the pic..

You also might want to consider how long the drivetrain is going to be with a 203/205. They are easy in a 60, but get real close in a 40...

Mace,
Do you think that it will be any longer than than the 203/ 19 spline route?
Damn...I was of the impression that the diffs would swap one to another. Thanks for clarifying that.

So you center the rear cruiser housing by way of slip fitting the mini housing!? Is that what was going on with "the Raisin" build there Woody did?
HUMPF...Interesting.

Granny Hansen is in town from Chicago, so I dont have time to read through the whole build...
Thanks for posting that link.

Hey Kieth, I have an IFS mini rear that is 3 linked, comes with the upper Y link, 1 chromo shaft and 2 stock shafts. All you would need is to build lower links...which is easy....and buy airshocks/coilovers...just sayin...;)

Everyone LOVES the idea of ME doing the links.....

Thanks brotha!

Okay, lets do mine instead. :grinpimp:

If business picks up and I go back to full time I should have the funds by 2020.

Precisely WHY Im hell bent on running the leafs!

You center the LC housing by using the mini truck tubes and the LC center section... That may be what you ment, but you confused the hell outta me!

Just to keep the thread alive...
I havent done A THING to the 40, which I am tentatively calling "THE BRUISE". Ive been spending my comp time on researching various things, scanning CL for cheap parts that I could use etc.
MOST important, Im trying to keep MY HEAD in the game of my priorities of this build. I find myself looking in 20 different directions to go and attempting to make them happen all at once.
So, Ive resolved to take it in stride, pull the tub get things cleaned up and GET THE RIG RUNNING with the new power train in FIRST and FOREMOST. Then I can worry about the REALLY FUN stuff. For now though, Ill have to frugally spend my money getting that accomplished.
My garage time has been spent STILL working on my friends door chop.
The first door is complete, and Im well into the second at this point in time.
So, work on the BRUISE should begin again in a couple of weeks which Im really looking forward to.

TUB IS FREEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:bounce::bounce2:
Finally broke the window hinges free and pulled the windshield too.
Gotta do a tune up on my daughters 4 runner this weekend BEFORE I consume the garage TOTALLY and evict my wife from her beloved parking space for a while.

Let me know when you are going to take it off I'll come over and help.

I can hold your beer.

Okay, since Im a CHEAP ASS...anything BUT the high dollar gear boxes. That crap will come later on.

An atlas really is the best deal, delaying the inevitable is expensive. Dual NP cases is stout, heavy and LOOOONG will very difficult to make work in a 40. Dana300 is a good choice but you are almost into an atlas by the time you have it built and it still isn't bullet proof by any means. I like dual toy cases but everyone in my group has broken parts in that setup, all sorts of different s***. They all have buyers remorse.

Spending now in the heart of your 4wheel drive system is cheaper, my 2 pennies

I agree.

It's a 40. Can the idea of an auto tranny. SM465/Atlas would rock out and keep the driveline short. It would have lots of deep gears, and it would be super stout. If you keep Toyota axles, then substitute Orion for Atlas. My next 40 build will have a centered rear and Atlas. SM420 or 465 with your transfer of choice will be hard to beat for cost/utility etc. You can find them in working shape for $100.

Or SM420/Toybox2.8/Splitcase would be awesome as well, and can fit if you extend the wheel base. (SM420 saves 1.5 inches over SM465)

The problem with the NP203 doubler is that the adapters add a lot of length. Otherwise the 203 is a stout, heavy duty piece. I think, without measuring, that Auto trans + 203 doubler + adapters + transfer of choice will be too long for the FJ40's wheel base, even if extended.

I don't think there is a doubler shorter than Marlin's Toybox, so if you're going that route, keep the driveline length in mind.

Ill have one for you too. Is PBR okay!?:D

If I had it to do over this is the exact set-up I wound use, except I'd go with 4.7:1 gears in the toy box.
I think it would be cheaper than the TB/Orion set up I have and a lot less hassle.

With the auto, you would not absolutely need a doubler.
