There have been posts on this, but I'll save you a search. The mod is to allow locking the center diff when running in high. And running in low w/o the center locked (I think)

-Matt

The Pin 7 mod allows for manual control for locking of the center diff in high or low range and at the same time retain the correct (factory) transmission shift points depending on high or low range.

I thought it was when you're in 4LO that the CDL won't come on unless you press the actual button.

That is exactly what the mod does, by interrupting the "shifted into low" signal that would otherwise activate the relays that cause the center diff to lock. That is also all that pulling pin 7 does.

Installing a Center Diff Lock switch allows you to manually lock the center diff.

Not removing the connector on the center diff avoids screwing up the factory shift points when in low range.

So, even if I have a full time 4wd truck, I can install a center diff lock switch and make it part time?

Who sells those switches, and is there a tutorial on the install?

Besides installing the switch you would also install locking hubs and have to remove the front driveshaft to make it Part time 4WD. Then if you wanted AWD, replace the driveshaft, lock the hubs and unlock the CDL.

Install is easy as pie but it won't acommplish that. C-Dan can hook you up with the switch.

Doc, the switch essentially switches you from AWD to 4WD, in either high or low range. You can get one from Sleeffroad, see the link in the first post above, he's also got a very good writeup on the install... it's very straight forward. Pin7 is a little more involved but still not difficult by any means.

Raven, if you end up tackling the 9/19, I'm curious how it goes.. please let us know, and take lots of pictures if possible.. as this one hasn't been as well documented.

will do :)

Soooooo, is this the CDL switch we are talking about? This is a pick of my dash, looking at the switch in the upper left. Mines a 97' does this mean the PO installed this? Also, can you have the switch and no Pin 7 Mod? I have tried pushing it and it lights up on the dash ???

looks like a CDL to me.

Ok, at the risk of being flamed- YES I already read the FAQ about AWD vs 4wd, but I'm still confused as how it pertains to my cruiser.

Ok, I have full time 4wd- so power is going to the rear wheels until the fronts slip right? Then the t-case sends power to the front to regain traction, while still sending power to the rear.

If I install the center lock switch- essentially this allows me to lock the center diff and send power to the front wheels all the time? Yes?

I think that makes sense. Basically it gives me a selectable 4wd High range, where as now I do not have that. ???

Montana,

Yup,

The PO saved you a few bucks. The pin 7 may or may not have been done. Does the center lock by its self when you shift into low?

That is a pretty good understanding!

One more question:

If I install the c-diff lock switch, will I loose full time 4wd abilities? Will the ECU now never send power to the front wheels unless the switch is selected?

Because that could be bad if you are on a wet road and slip without the switch engaged.

nope,
you missed one very important point. when unlocked if the front end slips it just slips. no adjustment of torque to the slipping wheel. there is no awd speed sensing trnasfer on the cruiser. it is either on a viscous coupler or you bypass the coupler with the cdl switch.

Rule of thumb: Don't lock anything unless you will be going slow and looking at questionable terrain.

Ok, so I went out and shifted from high to nuetral and a red light on the dash "A/T P" lit up and then shifted into Low and that light went out and nothing else lit up until I pushed the CDL switch and then the sideways "H" symbol lit up. So what does that mean? I am guessing I have the Pin 7 as well?

Sometimes it helps me to talk about it out loud-

Ok, so I'm cruisin' around town in the cruiser and a banana truck wipes out in front of me. Bananas everywhere! So, the cruiser senses the slippage and runs power to the front wheels regardless of wether or not I have the button pushed.

Just then, a ice cream truck wipes out on the bananas, rolls over, and now there's ice cream all over the street. I'm goin' no place, cause the front wheels are just a slippin' away, so I lock the c-diff. Then the front and rear wheels will turn at the same rate, and I'll now get moving.... to the nearest grocery store to buy some whip cream!
