I have read a bit about the CDL mod, but I´m not clear yet....

As in older model the 97 does not have a CDL switch, so I guess the mod is about adding a CDL. I plan to use my LC for daily use as well as lite trail and overlanding...

So I have a couple of questions.

Why do the CDL mod>
Should I do the CDL mod>
What do I gain by doing this>

As you can tell I'm new to LCs,have some wheeling experience...

Help!!!!

Adding CDL switch allows you unlock it and still remain in low range. (possible scenarios; tight turns with low range, etc)

Adding CDL switch + 7pin allows full control over the center diff; unlock/lock in hi range or low.

Basically giving you the driver full control over the behavoir.

Only neg is remembering to lock it when you need or want it LOL.

HTH

Just do it........................NIKE

Adding a CDL switch allows you to lock the CD in high range, where it would not normally be locked by the default behavior of the Hi/Lo lever.

Doing the pin 7 mod allows you to over ride the default locking of the CDL in low range and drive with the CD unlocked in Lo. With this mod, the operation of the CD is entirely manually controlled by the CDL switch. With this mod and without the CDL switch, you would no longer be able to lock the CD in Lo range.

To summarize, adding the switch and doing the pin 7 mod gives total manual control of the CDL.

:bang::whoops: Got it backwards. THanks.

It is an easy install and allows you to have the option of using lockers in high range NOT just low range.

The best thing in my opinion that you guys haven't mentioned is that the CDL will disable the ABS when pushed in High.
Unless you are going to be wheeling in the rocks on tight trails the 7 pin mod is not necessary. I just opened up the dash and plugged in an extra hazard light and now I have a CDL switch that I hit as soon as I leave pavement.

I'm sold on the CDL mod.... Now... Does anyone have instructions or how to, maybe a link to a previous post.... I will be definitely be doing it and bragging about in my local club...

I have a question.
When clicking on the switch should I stop to cero to lock or unlock?
No. You can lock/unlock while moving. I run low range a lot without CDL on. Tight, curvy trails without a lot of traction challenges are common around here. Rig seems to steer easier and more accurately with CDL off. John

Scrowley, to specify.... It allows CDL operation in hi... Not the differential lockers, correct?

Thanks John.
I haven't done this mod yet, but it's part of the plan.

without the CDL factory locjers can only be engaged in LOW.
with the CDL you can lock the CD and use lockers in HIGH range.

No to the F/R lock in Hi. As well, it is possible to modify the hazard switch to be a CDL switch. Also, hella cheaper to mod the hazard switch.

Do some searching, and you will find the how-to. I used the switch from a 94 Paseo.

Okay, it seams like there is some unclear info in this thread, I would like to make one simple post to describe exactly what the CDL switch allows, and what the 7-pin mod allows.

CDL Switch - Allows you to lock the center diff on your own, in high range. Your truck will still automatically lock the center diff when you shift to low range, regardless of the position of your CDL switch. With the center diff locked in high range, you are now free to use your factory front and rear lockers as you see fit.

7-Pin Mod - When combined with the addition of a CDL switch, this allows you full control of your center diff. Your truck will NO LONGER automatically lock the center diff when you shift to low range. You have to manually lock the center diff via your CDL switch. This mod should only be done if you have already added the CDL switch.

Both of these mods should be done by EVERY FZJ80 owner that drives their truck off-road or has to deal with adverse road conditions. If you need low range and maneuverability through tight areas at the same time, low range w/o the center diff locked is great.

so whos correct inkpot or 93yotasr5

using front rear diff locks on high with this mod

I have used my lockers in high range with the center diff locked as recently as yesterday, it works just fine for me!

Do the pin7 at the same time as the CDL. Takes about 15 minutes start to finish for both. It lets you:
1) Full control of lockers and center diff locking
2) Use center diff lock in HI range
3) Use front/rear lockers in HI range
4) unlock center diff in LOW range, leading to tighter turns.
