Aloha, im about to purchase a 1978 fj40 and the guy says the truck runs for a while untill the carburater floods then the engine dies. it wont restart untill the carb has unflooded. will buying a new carburater solve this problem? and where should i buy one? are the weber ones any good? and help would be awesome. many thanks.

Hope your getting a good deal. I would be suspicious of a seller not willing to rebuild the old carb for a rig he is selling. I know if I had a fj40 that I was trying to sell and a carb rebuild/replacement would fix its only problem. It would be done to get a few more bucks and or some peace of mind. A new carb should answer your problems... if that is the only problem.

im getting it for $1000. hes moving off the island and it has a lot of rust on the body. whats a good website to order parts?

If it is only a carb problem, then rebuild it yourself or send it off to a pro and have them do it. It should probably cost around $300-ish from what I have read on here.

You guys are awesome thanks for the help. I'm sure I'll have many more questions when I get the rig!

I don't know if your interested, but I'll be back on Maui in about a week and could help you look this thing over. I'm assuming you're looking at the gold FJ40 in Kihei. Ask a few more questions before you buy, especially since they claim it's a 1978 but it's got pre-'75 turn signals and questionable registration. I'm not sure how long you've been there, but also be aware of the mandatory state safety inspection. Cracked windshield, faulty lights, no horn, all will fail to pass. Some stations are more strict than others. I used to have a pizza delivered to a guy in Kihei who would in turn give me my safety sticker for my '74 FJ40. That was the only way it would ever pass. That was 20 years ago.

Seriously, though, give me a shout. I'd love to help. Pomaika'i, Aloha!

It is worth checking out why it is flooding. After it stall presumably because it is flooded, check the fuel level in the window of the carb fuel bowl. If the window is full and there is fuel coming out of the bowl vent tubes, then the float is stuck or there is junk clogging the needle valve. Unstick it and it is fixed.

I'm with Pin_Head. A running carb rarely 'floods'. A couple of screws will take the top of the carb off, clean out any sludge/grit/aliens you find and see how it runs.

Gas filter is also suspect. If it runs for awhile, the filter gets clogged, no gas to the carb, engine quits.

I'm thinking your seller doesn't have a mechanical clue, tuff thing to troubleshoot but can probably talk him down. Buy it and send a few post to the list. You'll get your money back...

thanks pin-head, i talked to a mechanic friend of mine who said that is probably the problem. And Maui Cruiser, yes it is the gold 78 on MAUI and it would be awesome if you could help me out. I have been living here long time and know a place in kahalui that will pretty much safety anyone, so not too worried about that. guy says it has clean title. what else do you know about this cruiser that i dont? have you checked it out? im going to check it out on saturday with a mechanic friend.

Hey Nigel, I'm gonna be on the island starting Tuesday or Wednesday of next week and I'd be more than happy to help you oout. I'm thinking you might need to just pull off the top of the carb and adjust the float, maybe the needle valve is stuck open. My current '73 had that happen, fixed it in 10 minutes. Hopefully this is as easy.

I was born and raised in Wailuku, and shipped two FJ40's over in the late 1980's after high school. I wouldn't be surprised if some of my old parts have migrated into this rig over the years. There used to be a fella up in Haiku that had some parts rigs, and another guy upcountry, off either Omaopio or Pulehu road that had some more. Nowday's, the internet is your freind for parts. I'm just glad you're not getting an ex-rental heep!

PM me some contact info and we'll see what we can do.
