I've been battling an off and on issue with the carb on my 85 FJ60. It likes to run the float bowl dry. This doesn't happen often and I can get it restarted by dribbling a small amount of gas into the carb and all is well for a couple of weeks or a month. It is frustrating b/c there is no pattern to it. I have a new fuel pump on it with a new spacer behind it. I have a new filter on it. I dropped the tank (recall already done), steamed it out, and put a new pickup on it. Blew out all the lines. I checked the cut off solenoid on the carb and it is working correctly. Cleaned the little screen inside carb. I have the carb off of it now and have a rebuild kit coming. I thought it was a delivery problem but everything is new and working. Any thoughts on why the carb would starve itself? When she's running she idles and runs like a dream. The float is set so the fuel is in the middle of the sight glass when the truck is running. I thought it has to be the float sticking but it's clean as a whistle in there and the float is in good shape. I'll rebuild the carb and take it from there. Just wondering what you guys think. Maybe I'm missing something... Thanks, Mike

hows your carb fan?

Carb cooling fan works like a champ.

Howdy! Sounds like a vapor lock, usually due to having a fuel line way to close to a heat source. Not too common if it is a pretty stock. Are you getting a vacuum lock on the fuel tank? Try cracking the cap loose the next time this happens, and see if the pump can then pull enough fuel up to the engine to fire it up with out priming it. John

I have thought that it might be a vaccuum lock issue and have replaced the gas cap with a new one form Toyota. I never tried cracking it loose when the starvation occurred. I will try cracking the cap next time. Maybe a charcoal canister issue if the tank is getting vac locked? Thanks, Mike

Check your Evap canister for proper operation. There is a write up on this site about how to clear the Evap cannister.

Does your gas tank actually build up pressure? Mine do. Well, actually only one of the 2 does now because I swapped the hoses on the top of the EVAP. There is a post on this somewhere in the archives of MUD>

Your carb can also have internal leakage from the main well passage or the accellerator pump circuit. Used to see lots of Quadra-jets with porous castings. The fuel would just disappear after a week, sometimes less. So monitor the fuel level when you shut it down and recheck it periodiocally to see if there's actually loss while stationary. Once you dertermine it's internal you can effect a proper diagnosis and remedy. Many castings can be reused using an epoxy liner in the bowl area. Rebuilt carbs are also an option, but sometimes you just get a different set of problems.

Maybe the power piston is leaking? It sits at the bottom of the fuel bowl in the middle towards the back and actuated by vacuum. There is a spring on it I think which could be getting weak or the seals in the piston are leaking slowly and draining the gas from the bowl. Just a thought.

Carb is rebuilt and back on the 60. I picked up the kit from local dealer. The castings on the carb all were in good shape. Power piston in bottom of bowl wasn't leaking or slowly bleeding off. I also found some info on switching the lines on top of the charcoal canister to eliminate the vac lock that was going on in the tank. I think that the vac lock was my real problem. It runs and idles great after idle speed and idle mixture adjustments done according to the FSM's lean drop method. The FSM's are worth their weight in gold when rebuilding the carb and figuring out the routing of all the vac lines. Thanks for all your ideas and I hope I got this random fuel starvation thing licked. Mike

recall

What recall???

Gas tank and seat belt recall. Give Toyota a call at 1-800-331-4331 and ask if the recalls were done. You'll need to give them your VIN#. Maybe you'll get lucky. Mike

Getting "Lucky"

I got "lucky" on the gas tank recall. They put a brand new tank on, BUT they forgot to blow/flush it out. As a result, it ran about 5 blocks before the trash in the new tank made it to the screen in the carburetor inlet. If you have a new, recall gas tank installed, be certain that you insist it be cleaned beforehand. Some of those Toyota tanks have been sitting in storage for at least a decade. Mouse nest? Dirt daubers? Whatever.

i was to lazy to read the other post but if the float is getting stuck it would keep it from filling the bowl properly and could cause what you describe... a good cleaning and a rebuild would solve that problem.
