Hey guys,
I found a nice 2001 LC, silver on gray, 1-owner, accident-free, no nav with 120k miles. For sale by dealer for about $17k. CarFax shows it was a CA car all its life - I'm guessing that it was bought at auction by the WA dealer.

KBB is $17.4k, Edmunds is $13.6k. My understanding is that KBB is inflated (dealer's starting point for negotiations?) and that Edmunds is more realistic.

Assuming that the TB has been replaced, what do you guys think is a fair offer?

Thanks, RJ

I bought the same spec'd truck with receipts for t-belt and associated PM for $16,400 2 years ago, and i think mine was just a little high. I would try to bargain a little, but if the condition is mint just do it. mine wast mint, but probably a 8.5 out of 10.

Right now there are (2) 2003's in the Portland area that you could get for around that price. I'd say $14-15k with 120k on the clock would be reasonable.

You're right with KBB, it's called 'The Dealer's Friend'. Basically worthless anymore. However... the used car market is hot right now (not necessarily so for 13 mpg LC's!) and quality brand small cars are definitely selling for at or above KBB. I know, I've been shopping for a commuter and it's brutal out there. ***ushima disrupted a lot of the supply chain.

Hello All and Merry Christmas, This is my first Post to this site.
First off I would thank the people who posted on the CV boot leak threads, it was of good help.
I have been looking for a 1998-2002 for about 2.5 months and have viewed about seven vehicles, they sell fast and even had one owner pull out at last minute after “verbal” deal was made. I am not pressed to buy but didn’t want to turn down a good opportunity.
A 2001 Land Cruiser was just delivered to me, it has 109,790 miles, white on tan, I paid $13,000. There are paint chips on the front and dings and scratches on the both bumpers with a cracked rear reflector, brakes and tires are good, the inside was well cared for. The vehicle has not been off road, has been regularly cleaned and garaged. Although it’s been in the so called rust belt the rust condition is better than LC previously viewed. It has been serviced by a Toyota dealer and is currently up to date with the maintenance schedule.
A “world Class inspection” was done by a Toyota dealer and it was said to be in good condition, no issues were reported on the check list although the service advisor did verbally say that both the right and left sides, inner and outer boots have signs of leaking. I didn’t look at this closely enough during my first viewing. Right now I see that there is some caked grease around the axle and boots. Otherwise the service guy thought the condition and maintenance is better than average for this region. The bummer is I can’t arrange my registration and plates until Tuesday. I am wondering what the compartment is below the electric moonroof switches and personal lights. On my RAV4 it’s a sunglass holder, is this for a garage door opener? What else has it been used for? I appreciate comments and feedback. Thanks

The overhead compartment in most often designed for a garage door opener. Some have installed a sat radio, control buttons and CB speaker. I'm happy using it for a door opener. Unlimited opportunity just like some of the blanks in the dash and console.

$13 for an 2001 with that mileage is a very good buy.

Congratulations on your new truck.

Looking to Buy a 100 what to look for

I am looking at a 100 series for the growing family. Will use it for camping and pulling the boat. What are the weak points to the 100. What do I look for as far as issues. Like the 80 s are known for head gasket issues what are the 100 know for

Also have a 1997 if anyone is interested

Hey guys,

I finally had a chance to inspect and test drive the 2001 LC I mentioned earlier. It showed/drove very well - I have only two concerns I'm hoping to get some opinions on:

1) The windshield was recently replaced and the carpet in the driver footwell is damp. The dealer says the car had been detailed and that explains why the carpet is damp underneath the floor mats throughout the vehicle. However, the carpet seemed more damp in the driver footwell than elsewhere, and I noticed that the trim which runs along the sides of the windshield to be sticking out where it meets the luggage rack (same on both sides). I suspect there is a leak, but it will be hard to prove this time of year in the PNW.

2) According to the service history provided by the dealer, at 70k miles, "tech removed and replaced timing belt and serpentine belt" - I'm concerned that the idler pulleys and tensioner may not have been replaced at that time, and in my experience, it's usually a bearing failure which causes the belt to break. Also, there was no mention of the water pump ever having been replaced.

This is a tough one for me – this vehicle is otherwise my ideal, but the windshield could be a major headache and I feel at a disadvantage negotiating on the TB service, which I think should be done again soon.

Thanks, RJ

Depending on the dealers commitment to doing quality work....I would have a 3 party inspect this 100 series. I know of a dealer here in Portland Oregon (Jordan Motorz) who had a 100 series that had all kinds of problems that they were not going to fix and they were asking over 13k for a 1999 model year. Yes, they did a detail (their own in house detail person) but they did not bother to replace broken trim on the exterior or interior. IMHO, I would only trust a Toyota Dealer that is selling a certified 100 series.....but being that the older 100 series probably do not qualify for Factory certification leaves lots of chance for problems as vehicles pass from one owner to another.

Post up a copy of the service history and let the forum scrutinize it! Also, have the dealer get that interior dried out then go back after a bit of rain and double check.

What kind of dealer is selling this rig?

1999 100 Series on CL for sale........

I have been in touch with this seller and he lied about the rear bumper replacement and that it did have factory tow hitch (it does not). Am bothered that he lied....anybody been in touch with him?

I’ve got a photocopy of a printout of the service history which makes it a bit difficult to read and I doubt it would scan in well. It is a 1-owner that the PO traded in for a 200-series at a Toyota dealer. IMO, the PO was good about maintenance with dealer service every 10k or so. What is interesting was this dealer was able to pull the entire service history which included service done at other Toyota dealers in other states – I didn’t think that was possible. I suspect that this dealer had the windshield replaced after they took it in on trade – it looks very fresh.

I’m avoiding independent used car dealers for the reasons you mentioned and prefer to only deal with personal sellers or Toyota franchises. It also seems the vehicles at the independent places have a high number of owners per, accident history on the CARFAX and absolutely no maintenance history.

Dealer prices are high out here, their stuff isn’t selling and they don’t seem willing to come down. $15k for a 10 year old truck with 120k miles that gets 15mpg is absurd to a lot of people unless you have an illness ;-)

Mulling going from 00 to 03- differences/opinions??

I am currently driving an 00 with 143K. Runs like an LC- flawless. I have replaced the head unit and all door speakers, fat matted all doors, typical lift with diff drop, new OEM shocks, tires, etc. Everything on it works great. Buuuut, I found an 03 with 95K, service records. Looks nice in pics. They're asking $21. I think I can get around $13 or so for mine. What thinks Mud?

YOu can do a lot to your truck for $7000. The only reason to upgrade would be for the 5 speed trans and until I finish the conversion setup to go aftermarket Radio you are stuck with the the OEM POS.

A compelling reason to stay with the 00 is that it's the devil you know.

I emailed this ad, asking about maint, trans and exhaust manifolds... Response i received is below.

What do you think of the price?

I have a 87 fj60 i drive about 1500 mi / yr, smog is an issue every to years , it passes but thy have to mess with it for about $150 on the ave to pass. It runs well and has no rust and the body is clean. Thinking of a fj80 or fj100. This one is close to me, thinking i can get it down to 12k , it will be a cash del. then i can sell my fj for 2 to 2.5k

Thanks for any advice..

Rob

Hey Rob,

That sounds like a good deal to me, especially given the receipts. Long owner history as well. White is a great color. Not sure how important third-row seating is to you though?

Two things I’d be wary of:
1) The transmission issue, which I understand is quite rare.
2) The A/C system not blowing cold – The last couple 100s I looked at with that mileage had recent major service, with replacement of the (noisy) compressor, clutch and (leaking) hoses to the rear.

If the brackets are there, you can add the 3rd row. Some of us have installed drawers and my 3rd row is sitting in my basement. Having a history to me showing proper maintenance is a major plus. I am sure a lot of owners just ignored the 90K service, getting it done shows the right attitude to maintenance as a whole.
