And this was a good excuse to replace the belts on my 80 series and use the old ones for my new battery charger.
NEVER miss an opportunity for maintenance.

I had a bit of a moment the last trip i took the truck on ... i set it on fire
I got bored waiting for everyone to get ready one morning so i went for a drive to warm my truck up . but i get carried away as usual . once the engine was up to temp i thought i can get a bit of speed now. After coming to a stop from 120kph i realized somethings wrong with the brakes (I was having issues with a small brake fluid leak the day before I thought it might be a failing master cylinder because there was fluid dripping down the brake booster) but when i stomped on the brakes this time i felt a lot of fluid get pumped out and only the rear brakes locked up. Pulled up at camp and notice smoke coming up the wind screen, lifted the bonnet the header i wrapped in exhaust wrap had soaked up all the brake fluid and was on fire . I found my fire extinguisher and put it out and nothing was singed.

I think the brake hoses had been knocked out of place and were too close to the exhaust. I think that might have some thing to do with the jumps i was doing the day before.

I had enough brake hoses in my box of spare parts but after fitting them i decided to sit that day of 4wding out in case the exhaust wrap on the header soaked in brake fluid decided to catch on fire again. So i found a passenger seat to ride in.

I decided i need some more anti death features. So i fitted some harness and bucket seats.
I left the original seat belts in as well for short drives and for when i cant be f*cked putting on a 5 point harness.

Since the incident with the fire i decided i need a safer petrol tank than a old rusty one held on by one perished tie down.
So i came up with a plan for an aluminum one. I was gunna design a tank to go underneath, but with the winch where it is and the fact that i moved the rear diff back 200mm i decided to keep it simple and keep it on the back. It works out to be just under 110 litres plus my 10 litre surge tank.

So that means at the moment, it will cost about 370 nz dollars to fill it from empty 👍

Hello,

How much for a liter of petrol in your neck of the woods?

Just curious.

Juan

I leak tested the tank, no leaks first try. So i installed it.

Much tidier. Its leave more room on the back for fire wood too.

It actually costs more to fill than it did to make. This is probably a good excuse to wire up the fuel gauge.

I took the truck for a thrash around the paddock after work today, and found the first new casualty from the fire (apart from the melted washer bottle hose) The water temp gauge suddenly jumped from operating temp to zero, the sender was a bit melted and only just now fell off. That was the 3rd temp sender Ive bought for this truck . The first one i broke when i forgot to disconnect it when i was pulling out the blown up motor, so i replaced it and broke the new one off on the shock tower, while i was putting the new motor in, and now i melted the 3rd one with fire. haha . now that im whingeing about problems Ive had, the original brass adapter for the temp sender i got with the LS conversion kit, broke off in the block before id even driven it. So i had to muck around getting the broken bit out of the block , then spend almost half a day making a new adapter. 👍 The joys of building your own vehicle.
Cheers
