That is awesome fan shroud work!

Its starting to look pretty cool
IMG_20200204_190912.jpg

Ive replaced both of the doors, they where about to fall off any way.
I got a fibreglass windscreen frame made up aswell, but im not bolting it up until ive built the external roll cage I know what my luck is like.
IMG_20200202_193226.jpg

So the old one will have to do for now.

I was gunna put the back seats back in, but i dont think i will now because iv run out of places for the tank, i dont wanna put it where it was originally behind the rear diff, because ive moved the diff back and i want to keep the weight off the rear so it tows better on the trailer. and i dont want it in the middle underneath, because thats where im putting the winch. So the tank will have to be in the cab.

Is this going to be a PTO underneath?

Yup thats the plan, but i dont want to use the Toyota PTO winch because its just too slow, so im going to copy an old NZ made forestry winch. Ill have a go at building it around a gearbox, ive got a mate whos done it.
Ive got a 40 series PTO box so i can reverse it and make the output face backwards and ill be able to pay the rope out in gear. Im not sure how im going to make the remote free spool work yet, ill have to think more about that.
The plan is to mount the winch somewhere behind the gearbox and in front of the diff, and the rope will go back to the rear cross member and around some pulleys to the front , so i can pull backwards as well.
Something similar to this

Some dirty c**t stole my camera out of my truck, so ive lost a lot of pictures . But i got a fair bit done.
-Shortened my drive shafts with a grinder
-made a bracket to mount the hydraulic fan in place
-brought a new radiator with the ports on the right side for the LS
-and tacked up a cage

Because its me who is gunna be driving it, i reckon i need to sort out some safety features before its drivable, or i might not survive the test drive.
I still need to make the brace that goes under the wind screen, i think ill make it removeable so i can fold down the wind screen.
Ill add some more little braces here and there as well
And ill add 2 removable diagonal braces behind the cab in the main hoop . Im not going to bother with a back wall on the cab, and ive given up on the idea of being able to put the fibreglass roof back on.

At the moment the cage isn't removable. every thing is bolted to the chassis, so if i ever need to take it off , ill have to make a few cut and add jointers.
Cheers

The fuel system:
I just want this thing running and driving,
So my plan is to strap my nissan safari fuel tank on the back, That is my main tank. And Ive fornicated an aluminum surge tank, with my high pressure fuel pump mounted in it. Ill have an inline low pressure fuel pump from a boat , moving fuel between the 2 tanks.

Ive taken the fuel warning light senser from the safari tank and mounted it half way up the surge tank, this way ill have the fuel gauge telling me the level in the main tank and a light telling me of the surge tank is more or less that half full

I might tidy this up later on, and put a main tank underneath, after Ive mounted the winch and i know where there is room

But this will get the truck going for now

DSCN3393.JPG

I was going to use some clear plastic hose as a sight glass for the surge tank, but that a bit dangerous, something rolling around in the back might brake the hose off the fitting and ill have petrol every where .

And i forgot to say , the cage is all inch and a half seamed black pipe (48mm OD) It doesn't have to be seamless schedule pipe according to the NZ4WDA rules

Cheers

Its almost ready to fire up for the first time , so i finished all the welding . before i put petrol anywhere near it. The cage is done, and ive given it a lick of paint.
DSCN3397.JPG

Ive folded up a bit of ally, and bolted it up as a roof, I was gunna use my mates cut down fibreglass roof , but that adds too much height.
DSCN3401.JPG

DSCN3403.JPG

The total height of this truck is only about 75mm higher than the roof height of what the red truck was. I use to be able to back the red truck on the trailer under a balcony, to roof would just clear. it doesn't fit anymore . It made a hell of a bang when i tried
Ill have to sort out a tarp or a bit of canvas or something to put on it when its on the trailer and when i have to leave it out side over night
Cheers

I was so close, i thought i was gunna take it for a test drive this weekend, but no i made a **** up.
I was bleeding the clutch, the pedal was starting to feel right then POP. the piston came out of the clutch slave cylinder. in the adapter between the gearbox and the engine theirs an adjustable clutch fork extension, i thought i must have adjusted that wrong. So the gearbox needs to come out so i can re adjust it, But in the Marks4wd instructions they say you need a slave cylinder with a smaller bore so you get a longer stroke. Ive got that, and i followed the instructions for setting the clutch fork extension thing. and when i get a crescent on the clutch fork, it feels like the clutch is engaging (or disengaging or whatever) . So thinking about it now, before i pull the gearbox out ill play around with the rod between the pedal and the master cylinder, and maybe the position of the slave.
A picture i took of inside the bell housing ages ago

But i did get a few things done this weekend.
It turns out the HJ and the BJ73 cabs are a bit different, so it took some mucking around to bolt my old seats into the new cab

And i got a new sign for in my workshop

Sh*t, Total lock down. After tomorrow this truck is gunna be my full time job.
Maybe I will have time to build some lobster back exhaust headers.

You know we all love a bit of weld porn... Bring It On! (make sure ya got plenty of welding consumables in stock)

IT RUNS !
Fu*k it growls without an exhaust
DSCN3424.JPG

Ive been doing all the little jobs ive been putting off, now that ive got heaps of time on my hands
Ive sorted out the temporary (but probably permanent) fuel tanks.
DSCN3425.JPG

But i cant take it for a drive, because the clutch fork needs adjusting. so instead of taking the gearbox out by my self lying in the dirt. Ill wait for the lockdown to finish and ill find a hoist to borrow, that will only take half a day.

Im still putting off making the exhaust headers because my gas axe run out of oxygen. So cutting out the flanges is gunna be a bastard of a job with a grinder, and then ill have to hole saw 8, 44mm holes with a battery drill.

Ive done most of the wiring, i still need to run a couple more and cable tie every thing up.
Ive mounted a reversing light.

DSCN3428.JPG

Its pretty cool building a truck with only things you have lying around, you have to get creative. I had to sacrifice a welding lead for the starter motor wiring.
Cheers

This is how I did the power steering hose, i haven't got any of the gear to crimp ends on hydraulic hoses so i had to use the hose from the red truck and from the surf to get the length. I cut the ends off and welded the correct fitting on the steel bits already crimped on. so the hose fitted up between the LS pump and the GU box.

DSCN3437.JPG

The problem is i havnt got enugh hoses lying around to T the hose off and run the hydraulic fan. So when the shops re open ill get an electric fan, to temporally use, it will only take about an hour the build the shroud.
I want this truck smashing through the bush as soon as i possibly can.

Cheers

It drives!
I took it for its first test drive today, a thrash around the paddock. And only one thing fell off, that i know of. Its so nimble and light and powerful its like driving a really tall go cart. Im pretty sure you could do a wheel stand if you booted it in low range on tarmac.
DSCN3460.JPG

DSCN3463.JPG

All that's left to do now is make an exhaust, which i can hopefully smash out in a weekend . and tidy every thing up. Im still waiting for the passenger door and a front drive shaft flange to arrive, they've been sitting in a shipping depot for almost 2 f**ken months now. Then ill take it out on her maiden voyage into the bush. Then ill sort out a winch and find a front locker.

The dash
Because this truck will never be on the road and pretty much only smashed around in low range, KMs wont tell me bugger all about when oils need to be changed, So i stole an hour meter from a digger. Its an old mechanical one. I managed to zero it, it was a miracle i was able to find the microscopic brass circlip that flew across my messy shed.
DSCN3465.JPG

Ive kept the wiring as simple as i could. I haven't used any of the wiring from the cruiser. So if something craps out in the bush i can hopefully find the problem and fix it in no time

Back when this truck was red and a diesel, i never had problems with the radiator clogging up with mud, probably because the winch and the bull bar stuck out so far. I reckon ill run into some problems now that the winch isn't on the front.
Ive taken the washer bottle from my old Hilux surf, which had 2 water pump things in it. One is plumbed in to squirt the windscreen and the other is attached to a hose a few meters long, that i can use to unclog the radiator. It seems to have a fair bit of pressure to it.
