Built a Cabin in Alaska

Had the opportunity to help a friend build a cabin in Alaska.
He bought property near Clam Gulch on the Kenai Peninsula.

Hired a local contractor to clear the land and build the foundation. They dig down 8’ and built a stem wall using treated lumber. They backfilled it using drainage gravel.

The kitchen unit was prebuilt in southern Californian. The lumber for the counter was milled from a drought killed redwood tree.

Finished the modular kitchen unit. Loaded it with tools and finishing lumber.
Plan was to drive it to Alaska. The boarders were closed so we added a Woodmizer LT15 and shipped it to Alaska on a freight ferry.

A handful of us flew to Alaska and it was time to get to work.
Dug a pit to back the trailer into and slid the kitchen unit onto the foundation.

Removed some trees for the sceptic system.
Set up the Woodmizer and began milling the lumber from the felled trees.

Needed power so a crew began on the solar rack. Trenched in conduit to the cabin.

Solar Rack came out better than I expected.
That is Mount Redoubt on the horizon, across the Cook Inlet.

Framing of the house started with a bundle of 2x6x16’

More framing and added 5 1/2” of foam insulation to the roof.

Time for wiring and outlets. My wife drilled every hole for the romex and was a great helper.

Ran the gas and water lines.
The well is not drilled yet.

Installed the scissor beam “rafters”. These were milled from the same redwood tree as the kitchen countertop.

Local contractor spray foamed the walls as we wrapped the cabin.

Finished the kitchen and began installing interior siding throughout the rest of the house.
The interior wood is Deador Cedar milled on the Woodmizer in southern Californian. It was then kiln dried and a millwright turned it into Tongue & Groove.
