Building my 1984 FJ60

I got around to taking some better pictures today. With work and me getting my Masters work has been slow on the 60 but I sure have been sinking money in it. As I said in the other thread about the vibration over 50 mph, the V-8 swap may move up if there are problems with the motor.

With the freshly powder coated rack on using the mounts from Groucho:

Hopefully if it stops pouring I'll be removing the fuzz tomorrow.

Yeah I am. I just need to find a good person in Houston to do it. Our house flooded in this bad storm we had about two weeks ago and I have been so busy moving and trying to get everything situated that I haven't had time to do much with the 60. I was able to get the bumper off which thanks to whoever put it on last was a bit of a chore.

Nice 60! I'm partial to the 861 Blue myself (same on my 84). Also good to know the color code if you ever want to repaint with stock color.

You have a great build planned. How's the noise with the carpet removed? I pulled my tar mat before starting my damplifier install. Dry ice and a hammer might be easier than spraying over it (or fighting to get the jute off the tar mat).

If you have a compressor you can do the interior yourself w/ a liner gun (not very expensive - harbor freight). You could also look at lizard skin - my uncle says it's a great dampener/liner. Or for a bit more $ - second skin has their spectrum, but not sure how it compares with a true liner like line-x or herculiner.

The noise is not too bad. It is louder though.

As far as the floor I think I'm just going to do it myself with Grizly Grit. I'll probably do the underside of the tub as well.

Hey man, that's a great looking rig! Congrats on the score, I like hearing appreciative mudders are finding the good ones!

I just wanted to share with you my recent experience. I mounted a large rack the same size as yours on my HJ60 a few months ago. After loading it the first time with some big tires for another truck (Unimog) I found the rack had ripped off the rain gutter on the rear mounts.

I don't know what your plans are, but if you are going to use your truck in conditions where the body will flex, (and they do twist) you may want to re-consider using a full length rack.

I would hope this information prevents you from having the same experience and unnecessary damages I have incurred.

I am considering using the rack, however with re-located mounts to take into consideration the body twist, ie move the forward mounts closer to center and replace the rear pair of mounts with one in the rear that is centered over the rear glass.

Well after reading about all the woes that can associated with hot dip galvanizing and powdercoating a frame and axles I am probably going to POR-15 both of them. As for the inside of the truck I'm going to remove the sound deadining and then put in some Grizzly Grip. The other good thing about doing both is that it will be a little easier on my pocket book than having it professionally done as I had planned before. I can take the money that I would have spent on both and invest it in my OME lift as well as my V-8 conversion. As of right now on the V-8 conversion it looks like I'm going to get a used 350 TBI and have it rebuilt. For the tranny I think I'm going to with the 700R4 rebuilt by GM. Unless someone can recomend a good tranny rebuilder in the Houston area.

I used Durabak (similar to Grizzly Grip) on the whole interior floor of my Fj62 with an old paint gun that my dad had laying around and it turned out way better than any roll on job that I have seen and just as cheap. On another note I am going to redo it all after I put some sound deadening/heat resistant material in because it is loud as sh*t now and the tranny hump gets real hot and in VA on a hot summer day it is miserable. Just some food for thought.

Dont get me wrong I am really happy with the way it turned out, it looks pretty Bad A** and the noise dosent really bother me but the heat is pretty killer. I think I am going to go with a company called second skin ( Sound Deadening Materials for Noise Reduction from Second Skin) they make all sorts of sound deadening/ heat material I think the one I am going to use is Damplifer Pro, they also make a bed liner. I have looked around on this site for a while and it seems that the people that went with Second Skin products seem to be happy and from what I can tell there customer service is pretty good.

I'm actually looking at a company I read about on here call All Car Carpets out of Australia. Seems pretty reasonable and looks pretty good. I will probably order the waterproof set-ip and put some RAAMAT under that.

Well I haven't posted an update in a while but I figure I should get on that.

Interior Battles:
I ordered some Vinyl flooring for the front and rear seating areas from Tru-Fit in Australia. I will let everyone know how that stuff looks. I also ordered some POR-15 Speed Liner for the rear cargo area. The current plan is to spray the floor, the back of the rear seat, and the side up to the headliner. I would also like to spray inside the panels where I will be storing gear. Kevin over at Wagon Gear got my storage panels done and I'm anxiously waiting for him to get back in the shop so he can send them out. I just have the two for the sides right now and I'm waiting for the tailgate one. I installed a dash that had less cracks then the one I had which was toast. It looks really good until you get really close and then you start seeing some small cracks here and there. Lets see I added the two outside air vents of my old dash to this new one and I also bought Pioneer with Ipod connection to install. I ordered a new rear view mirror for the inside as mine was deterioating. The one I got isn't too much better so at this point I'm not sure which direction I'm going to go with the rear view mirror. Finally I replaced the bulb harness for my gauge cluster as the I had was cracking at the connection points and the bulbs didn't want to stay in for the turn signals etc.

Exterior battles:
I'm still trying to get started on my bumpers. I have the steel but right now I'm just trying to finally decide on design. Right now I'm going to start with the rear bumper and then do the front. I figure the rear will probably be easier. I'm going to get some spindles and makea tire carrier and fuel can carrier on it as well. The front bumper is designed and just waiting to be built.

Suspension and Driveline Battles:
I had to get the rear driveshaft replaced and balanced. I also changed out the rear u-joint. I decided to do this because of a loud vibration I am getting over 55 mph but that didn't fix it so I have it at Javier's Automotive in Houston mainly for the carb but he is also trying to figure that one out. On the suspension my springs are very flat and in dire need of replacing. As of right now I'm leaning towards the 3" HFS kit with greasable shackles from Cool Cruisers. My big reason for this is that my dad works in Dallas but lives near Houston so he can just pick it up for me. I only want about 3" of lift so I think this will be a good kit for me. The shocks look pretty dang old too so those as well need replacing.

Mechanical Battles:
The carb has crapped out on me and left me stranded on the side of the road. Like I said above it's at Javier's and he is going to rebuild it for me. Other than that I need to finish removing my rear heater as right now there is a small leak in the line.

I think that's it for now. I'm waiting to take pictures when I get the flooring and rear panels ready to go in.

We have a lot in common (besides same year/color). I ordered the All Car Carpets Vinyl - which finally arrived 2 months later. Very bad customer service/reponsiveness. FYI. I'm waiting to install it once i finish with the dampener, but am curious how your Tru-Fit works out. I also am going to do a Pioneer/iPod HU. Just saving up for it now.
