Nah, he's got the scale all wrong!

Wow, rescued from page three!

So, lots going on in the past month or so. I built and shipped a bed for a Colorado customer. They received it late last week. I have also finished assembling bed for Sean in Phoenix. Still have to make his headache rack and extra parts.

Packaging the Colorado shipment: Built a framework off of the mounting tabs on the bottom and the headache/ tailgate atatchment points on the top. Then built that framework into a skid on the front wall. The beds will ship standing on the front wall in order to minimize the footprint and cost. The steel is isolated from the moisture in the wood by 6mil plastic with seams taped. I also included several large baggies of desiccant to keep the steel from flashing. Then I enclosed the whole thing in 3/8" OSB (5 sheets!) so it's pretty sturdy and safe. Takes a little over $100 in wood/screws/plastic and nearly a day of time to crate a bed.

This customer also ordered a headache rack so I had to weld one complete. That's the first one I actuall assembled and welded myself. Went pretty good. Trick is to keep it flat and square even though it is not square ( the rack is narrower at the top by design).

Somehow I never took any pictures of the finished crate.

But here is a couple shots from the garage showing two beds for Phoenix

They're gonna need some filler skimmed down along the floor welds on the sides to make them straight but its all new metal and no rust at least.

good news, bad news, good news

Long time, no post. I've been busy in many things but not as busy on these beds as I'd like. Always seems to be some other commitment fighting for time. I even lost all of last weekend due to a rare (for me) head cold.

Okay, the good news = all three Phoenix beds are done.

The bad = June is our highest precipitation month historically and this year was no exception. Despite my keeping the garage door closed as much as possible the mill oil on these beds was not enough to stop some rust flash. The worst hit was Jim's because it's been done and sitting by the door for several weeks now. It's pretty minor and rubs off easily but with all of the nooks and crannies you just can't access everywhere the rust is. Lets be clear here, there is no rust in between inside the overlapping joints. Just light and sporadic surface specs where moisture has taken hold. Even so it just ain't good enough to just rub off the rust.

The good = we have a DIY sandblasting place here in town where I can wheel in with a bed, blast for a half hour a drive away $55 lighter. So thats the plan. I'm pretty sure I can dust the rust off in 30 min, spirit the bed back to the garage and wrap it in plastic and desiccant for shipping.

I'll have to do it next Saturday as they close at 4:30 on weekdays. I am off work next week and my goal is to ship all three before the end of that week.

Is the rust so bad they need to be blasted. I was thinking all the nooks/crannies will end up full of blast media? Wouldn't a good paint prep (something like Metal Ready, etc.) take care of any mild surface rust? Of course you can get "flash" rust with that stuff too...

I'm with you Gusb metal prep is great for that and it leaves a protection so it wont flash back, I do it on all my bare metal projects...;)

I think it's so cool that you have 3 bare clean LPB beds sitting in your garage just hanging out together...

No sandblasting yet

Saturday... Rained out

So I prebuilt parts of the crates

I see the easy chair and a light mist on the driveway.
Could the delay in sandblasting be due to an excessive consumption of an Adult Beverage in that nearby container !

I'm on vacation this week... so.... yeah

Nah, my hands are tied till the rain stops. No room left in the garage to make more.

Today I made headache racks for Sean
