Entered the 40 series in a local car show!
Didn’t win anything but it was a great show put on bye the Santa Monica PD.
Chip Foose was judging the cars on display.
He liked that I kept the patina on the cruiser. We chatted for a bit and he kept on with his judging.
Overall a nice guy and a good show!

So I had this flickering dash lights when I would drive at night. It would just bug me seeing it come on and off.
So I removed the dash cluster and got my dremel with a flat wire brush and started cleaned the spring slotted sockets that attach to the rear of the cluster.
Then I used a flat screw driver to slightly flare out the socket so that it has a better bite.
Works much better no more flickering lights.

Electrons are such wimps. Everything needs to be skookum for them before they want to run around and make current. 😂

I got the new refurbished odometer from @JVZii and installed it on my 40 series.
I had a bit of trouble getting the old one out. But @JVZii walked me through with some videos through some pm's and finally got installed.
its all set now. just need to replace the new speedo cable I just bought because the previous odometer got stuck and snapped the end of the cabe.

Been working on the 40 lately. It has been running great and starting up every time I drive it which is not much.
But have been having this nagging carb backfire ever since I have had the carb rebuilt.
So I started digging around and reading post and everything points to a vacuum leak!
After removing the carb a few times and cleaning the surfaces and installing new gaskets.
Things didn’t get better. I removed the carb again and had walked away from it for a few days.

Got back and checked the studs and two of them were loose. Apparently they had backed out the many times I removed the carb.
Removed them cleaned the surface and re installed them.
And no more vacuum leak!
During all this I had checked and re checked points gap, timing, spark plugs and wires. And they all were functioning fine.
I also found a loose alternator ground wire (white/blue) that was arching and not making good contact why the truck would shut off as I was driving and backfire (tailpipe). Fixed that and it all went away.
Did a lean drop and adjustments and was back up to 19 inches on the gauge.
@mattressking suggested I bump up the timing too 10 degrees to fined more vacuum and sure enough it helped and I am up at 20 inches on the gauge.

So after all that it now runs and idles good with no misfire! But now I have a flat spot or hesitation as I press on the throttle.
I have to feather the pedal to make it go past the hesitation.

Next thing to tackle!

Nice work on fixing the vacuum leak!

I went through the same tune up as you, and I have the same hesitation as I press on the throttle. I initially thought it was the plunger/squirter (delivers a shot of gas when you first open the throttle to avoid the lean spot). The rubber bits tend to rip in the cold weather up here. I also wonder if the spring and lever arm position that controls the plunger need adjusting. :meh: Anyway, if you find a solution, please post up.

Yeah I was pretty baffled with the way it turned on me. But walking away for a few days clears up your mind and frustration.
I will post something up if I do find what the hesitation is.. 👍🏽

Wise words indeed.

I was encouraged by your results. I added 2 more degrees, and set the timing at 10 degrees. And reduced the idle speed just a little. My hesitation is nearly gone now.

What is your idle rpm set at? I set mine about 600. I wonder if your idle speed can be set lower, to avoid the possibility of pulling fuel from the main circuit at idle. Might be something to mess around with.
