I don’t see the point of any of this……

The point of a pinion brake or a t-case brake?

They have insane braking ability compared to that of a standard e-brake.
It allows you to use all the mechanical advantage of the gearing in the axles for the purpose of braking.

They are capable of being hand operated and in a manual rig this can be fitted to the shifter allowing you to run the pinion brake and and clutch and shift.

There are a lot of benefits for it for a wheeler but not so much the casual overlnader or forest service road driver.

By looks of the TC skid and drive shaft this would most likely have take a big hit or two on the trail.
Maybe even needing repairs to continue 🤷‍♂️

Yeah , I reckon for your type of wheeling damage would be inevitable.

The pinion type e brake can run away on uneven ground.
It relies on both rear tires having traction. If one tire doesn't have traction, you have an open diff centre that let's tires counter rotate enough that a rig can get away when parked.
I've seen it happen. When the last person stepped out of the car on a trail, weight shifted enough to unload a tire and the truck shifted about 15' , tires skidding and slipping on uneven ground. once the truck got a bit of momentum it didn't look like it was gonna stop.
Have seen a 4x4 and caravan shift on wet sloping grass too.

There is also the option of a hydraulic line lock. I did this on a different rig a decade ago using a chemical resistant, hand operated ball valve. Yes, this meant plumbing brake lines into the cab but it worked fantastically and being a manual valve I wasn’t dependent on an electrically commanded device.

I’ve been running 80’s pretty hard about 9 years now and have had very minimal problems with my E-brake cable that were easy enough to repair.

I had the same thing on my Patrol rock crawler. Worked great! I also had it plumbed into cutting break levers so I could lock a rear caliper and spin the Patrol on a dime.

Cheers

That's what the other thing I was going to ask about. Cutting brake levers. Are they of any use on the trail? I see folks with twin stick tcases doing front digs to swing around, but is there any advantage here for maneuverability or for better braking?

Yes, combine the cutting brake with a front dig and you can spin the truck on a dime.

Back in the day it was considered the poor mans four wheel steering.

Cheers

The sickest rock buggies have rear steer and cutting brakes, you can lock up the right or left rear wheel independently.
@woody Buggy is a awesome example.
He has a killer build thread on RockCrawler.Com

Don’t get me wrong, they have their place, but I don’t see how this is applicable to Broski’s 80… which is a light 80 with an auto

Because he wheels it hard.
A light 80 is still heavy
It's an option to eliminate other issues.
He fabs so it's not out of his wheel house.
Thinking outside the box never hurt

He doesn’t seem to be having issues though which is why I don’t understand this recommendation

The post was about issues with brake cable routing. Literally why I mentioned it

And it takes 3 seconds to weld a tab back on and fix his issue
Which will happen again and again. I think the point was art of the possible for alternative solutions.

I understand now. It still seems like a overblown solution to a very small problem
Given the level of OCD flowing through these forums, everything is overblown ... always.

And with that I'll stop cluttering broski's build thread before i get told off sternly.

I would definitely entertain an alternative to the poorly routed E- brake cables. But I think the T-case Pinion disk brake is pretty old school now and have been replaced with cutting brakes.
It also look's like I would be just trading one issue for another as the way the 80 T-case hangs low in the back i would undoubtedly destroy the low hanging disk and it wouldn't be a easy weld a tab back on affair !!

Now back to our regular programming 😂

Did a full repaint of the armor as it was looking beat and there always a bunch of good looking Land Cruiser's at SAS plus @Muddy Feet well be there with his flock of pretty boy 80's 🤣
All kidding aside John & Candon and there boy's have some of the cleanest 80's out there two of them being 4.7 swapped by Slee and all three well be at SAS 😍

Need to Finnish working on the skid plate and swap out the 39s for @mustcamp's 37s and I well be ready to go.
Got the rear seat's installed yesterday.

This chat has made me wonder if i could use something like the Wilwood stand alone parking brake calipers (mechanical or electric) and configure those as a cutting brake 🤔
