i have a fj55 with disks in the front and vacume brakes, problem is that you have to alway pump them once then the second time you hit the pedal you have pressre. and i also noticed that if you hold the brakes for a long period of time they seem to act like there bleeding off.. anyone else have this problem or any advice, anyhting would be great thanks

Sounds like the master brake cylinder.Easy to fix, fairly cheap to replace. Mike

First, if you need to pump your brakes, it means they are out of adjustment. Tighten your drum brakes until they are tight. Back off a couple clicks and call it good. There are LOTS of drum brake adjusting threads here on mud.

Second, if the brakes are slowly bleeding off, and you aren't visibly leaking brake fluid anywhere, it is the master cylinder. Rebuild it or replace it. There are LOTS of threads on this as well.

Good luck!

I second the master and a possible adjustment on the rear drums. I just put in (last weekend) a rebuilt master I got from Napa. It was under $40. Bleeding was a huge pain because I did not bench bleed it first. It came with the bench bleeding kit, but I didn't do it. Next time I will for sure.

ok cool i have a spare master off another 40 i know worked, and i will have to try ajusting the rears out ive kept an eye on the fluid so i know its not using any and it seems to be dry. thanks....:D

residual valve

Check someone didnt remove the residual valve for the rear brakes and that it is working

when you crack a line for the drums you should get a little squirt out from the residual pressure in the line

what year and are the discs conversion or did it come that way?

The valve keeps the pistons from sucking in too far so they are ready to push as soon as you put pressure to it

This keeps the pedal high and firm and one symptom of it being gone or bad is having to pump

could be a little air too so might be worth bleeding them

never hurts to adjust while you are at it:)
