Bragging Dad - daughter repairs 80 2000 miles from home

I have been messing around with Vanagons, then an unusual 20 valve quattro sedan, kiddos, another porsche, a new job, and then back to Vanagons. The Cruisers never break! There's more to life than oil changes and what tire fits posts So my Vanagon blows an engine. The Porsche needs a complete engine, The Lexus needs brake lines. Those have been sojurns and now I'm back!

Nice work. Always satisfying when one of your kids or the wife fixes things themselves. A couple of weeks ago my wife comes home and says her 94 won't start. I asked how she got home. She says I opened the hood and wiggled the black wire until it would start, followed by can you look at it ? Apparently she has seen me fix loose grounds enough that she new this was the go to for the problem she was having. I went out and sure enough the negative battery terminal had worked loose enough to cause an intermittent starting issue. It used to be she would call me when something like this would happen and I would have to walk her through over the phone.

Heh - I'm happy as I age, actually. Ask me again in 30 years! So, I've been messing around with a bunch of project cars in my signature and busy with my work. When the kiddos got old enough to do stuff with, I happily turned that direction as well. Now one is at college and my son and I are elbow deep in the 924. A fresh engine currently sits in the stand ready to install, and we brought the hoist in out of a snowbank today to pull the bad one out as its disconnected completely and the bell housing bolts and motor mount bolts are loose. So we are probably 30 minutes of work to yank it. I bought it for 250 bucks with a nonrunning engine and it will be his first car if we can make it roadworthy. Every 16yo should start their driving career with a rear wheel drive manual transmission vehicle, eh? We shall see.....

Great story! What a cool thing for her to brag about at school haha.

I sent my little sister a fuel pressure regulator for her 1993 Jetta while she was at college about ten years ago. I emailed her a diagram I made in MS Paint then talked her through replacing it on the phone and she was thrilled to have a working car again. There's something so satisfying about fixing a car even if you're not there to do it.

Would love to share the 924 build - is that OK with the mods? Seems like a lot of sites these days freak over members posting their vehicle activities on other makes. It's a 1978 and I'm interested in the comments from reviews that its the best handling Porsche out of the box of its day. Super light - no options, manual steering, very basic. Tranny on rear axle, engine up front with torque tube connecting.
