Well last time I took it out I lost the drive to the front wheels... Passenger side would sorta pretend to work but would not pull at all, driver side would make a loud bang / pop noise when in 4wd and applying the brakes to hold the front tires and just making the rear drive line spin. So that to me told me a busted driver birf.

Well today I finally got around to pulling it apart, so far the passenger side leaves me a little depressed... I was really hoping to find a busted birf or maybe a busted hub but now I am starting to think it is more serious than what I had originally thought...

The hub looked fine and none of the splines on the passenger side longfield set were stripped and it was all holding together just fine.

When I took it out I remember thinking to myself that when in 4wd it sorta felt like something as going on with the front but it was still pulling so i ignored it as it could have been something minor (did find steering arm studs had come loose AGAIN) then out of nowhere on an easy obstical it lost the front drive, it was so spontaneous i thought somehow the hub had come unlocked or had popped.

1.) was doing fine here.
2.) passenger side tires off of the ground and this is where i noticed it wasnt pulling up front, then after backing up to get a better angle noticed the welded rear had broke again. (spider gears and side gears are trashed from being welded then broke so many times before. I wondered how long it would last when I found their condition and re welded them again.)
3.) I had to winch to get to this point.

Here is what I pulled out.

1.) you can see the birf and axle are still together
2.) inner axle seal is trashed tho, somehow the rubber was ripped out of it and is MIA.
3.) why I hate taking the front end apart.

::EDIT::

The site is not letting me upload the photos right now for some reason so I will add them later i guess. So till then I guess I will go put the front end back together on that side again.

I slapped it back together real fast and threw it in 4wd and it looks like the detroit is the problem... Fxxx!!

it wont lock down for some reason I can actually grab the tires with it on jack stands and with some hefty force cause it to "break free" till it grabs again. which isnt enough to move the truck. Not sure how I damaged it probably same time I took out the rear axle. but I wont know till I get it apart and check for damages. As long as it is ready in march I dont really care just frustrating.

Joel I feel bad for you... You should have sold it over seas to where you wouldn't have to see your baby be destroyed. I cried at Wheeltoberfest when I saw how it was being treated.

It was being treated like a trail rig that sits on a trailer. Besides, I know the truck has been rolled many many many times before I got it. Only thing different it I will generously use the skinny pedal when needed which only 1 other person was around when I busted the rear axle.

Joel did tell me 3 rules....
1.) Make it
2.) Break it
3.) Or roll it.

I follow them to the T.

Well all I needed was the make it part :p. Detroits
only lock under load ck out they web site for diag steps it'll shock you

I know only load, got one in the other 60.

I had it in stupid low and 1st on jack stands hubs locked and 4wd and I could hold both front tires from spinning if i had a strong enough grip on the rubber with a loud pop coming from the differential.

I will check the website however, hopefully it is something simple and easy / not expensive. Still gotta rebuild the front from the inners being done and wipers leaking.

Thanks.

Sucks if you broke it but rob the one from Fiona she's got 456's too right

Yea I had planned on putting the detroit from Fiona in the back of the truggy to get rig of the welded rear that has seen better days. but now looks like i will be swapping front and rear 3rds from Fiona into the truggy. they do share the same gears so if it aint broke to bad I will just fix it and leave it in Patches. but I plan on a 14B in the rear of the truggy so its whatever anyhow I guess.

Wait a sec, you had problems with the front axle and thought it was a birf. Then you pulled out what you thought was the problem side and everything was fine. Why wouldn't you check the other side and then the diff before putting everything back together?

I wouldn't suspect a broken detriot either, and I am interested about how it broke, but if the driveshaft is spinning and it's not the birfs, then it's gotta be the diff.

I didnt have daylight enough to check the other side and it needs seals up front anyhow so it will have to come apart no matter what before I take it back out. Not to mention the other side does the EXACT SAME thing as the side I pulled apart. The banging and poping is coming very obviously from the diff area, I originally thought I may have popped the transfer case like joel did once but I wasnt leaking oil dont have any cracks and the front driveshaft has power still. whatever happened happened in the diff. and the front has a detroit so.... thats what im looking at as my suspect, likely from my heavy throttle attacks in october when I busted the rear axle the shock load of sudden traction then loss then traction as the locker locked and un locked is probably what did the damage.

I can tell you the longs are the freaking s*** tho! tough mo fo's for sure.

I was going to replace the welded rear with IPOR's spool

I'm interested to see what exactly broke in the diff. I thought that Detroits were supposed to be bomb proof, especially in a front axle.

Ill consider it, but the spider gears are not gonna be fun to remove. more or less the carrier is still good but spider and side gears are junk. I have another set but getting the old out and new in will be a long time coming. I think i will just swap diffs for now with Fiona both front and rear then when I do the 14B under the truggy i will have a spare gearset and then can take the time to put a spool in there. I dunno time will tell i guess.

You and me both! hopefully a spring just popped out or something somehow I dunno. they sell replacement parts So if it aint trashed I will repair it.

you find the broken parts yet ??

its been either below freezing or raining up here, I was gonna swap the thirds from Fiona to Patches today but woke up to the rain and no cover on the truck AGAIN... wasnt supposed to rain till tomorrow... I dont know how the radio still works. But I need to get it all swapped so I can do a shake down run before march. then re paint everything for the new season.
