Been a little while, lot of work getting done on the 2002. Since my paint and body guy is running behind, most likely I’ll take the 80 on the Targa as a support vehicle. Mainly beverage support and possible idiot rescue, but will be a great drive anyway.

Wanted to see if I could get to the bottom of my “whistling” noise coming from the engine, took to K&H in Canoga Park for a quick diagnostic. Evidently the 1FZ makes a high-pitched whistling noise at high RPM under load according to the tech... but I’m not sure that’s totally right. He didn’t think it was anything to worry about though. Performance has been great. Not concerned but also not totally buying that, without verifying with the Mud hive mind.

Cool shop though. Some photos for your enjoyment. This brown 40 is a 1979, sold for $19k.

They whistle. It’s been documented by several people that these engines whistle. Mine isn’t loud but it’s there. Is yours uncomfortably loud or just there and you know it’s there?

Mine whistles.

Mine whistles. It goes woooo woooo ~Bubb Rubb

Thanks all! It does whistle but it’s not uncomfortable, just there. As long as I know it’s normal it doesn’t bother me. What bugged me most was thinking that I had work to do finding an exhaust leak every time I heard it. But if it’s normal, I’m good.

I also have a “rattle-whistle” at about 2000 RPM under load. Doesn’t happen at any other point in the rev range or when in neutral at the same RPM. When researching the high-pitched whistle, there were a couple of threads that discussed it, need to go back and search more intentionally. Tech thought it was the cat possibly, and after some strategic banging and shaking the exhaust, he found a minor rattle inside one of the cats. I can live with that too, as it passed smog a year ago and can wait until it needs replacement to deal with it, if that’s what is making the noise. More research here.

Even though he’s going slow, excited for the 02 to be finished. I had him give me a quote to respray the oxidized roof and failing clear on the fender flares, which was very reasonable in price. He said it would take about 3-4 days, which I now know means more like 2 weeks at minimum... but he does good work and as long as I have another car available, don’t mind it being out for a little while.

Again, not 80 related but y’all are car guys :)

Replace the muffler

Replacing the old muffler fixed my whistle. Hacked the resonator off years ago.

Update on the "rattle-whistle" after more forum research, tightened down the 4 bolts holding the throttle body to the upper intake, which seems to have cleared it up, at least for a minute. The bolts seemed tight enough but put a little extra bean into them, and they turned just a tad. It also may have been just the intake hose, which got moved a little as I got the socket on the bolt head.

Either way seems good for now, but dollars to donuts that it comes back...

Placed order for a new hood insulator pad / clips, OEM PCV valve / grommet / hoses, and all new hoses for the charcoal canister. Going to rebuild the OG canister before heading out on this trip and tired of the slightly oily stink coming from the old insulator pad, which is caked in garbage.

Quick morning of small projects - hood insulator pad / clips, new OEM PCV valve / grommet / hoses, charcoal canister hoses and a new fuel soft line. Fun stuff and no more oil stink!

Pulled off and ready to install the new one:

Installed! Fresh and clean...

Old hoses. This PCV grommet was petrified, was finally able to pull off with a pair of vise-grips and some bean. Every time I opened the hood this insulated PCV hose irritated me...but it may have been OEM, no idea. It had an OEM-like hose inside. Who knows.

Grommet chunks. These were fun to fish out of the valve cover. I checked in there thoroughly before installing new parts.

New hoses, valve, and clamps.

My rattle-whistle came back, on a test drive this am checked with window and hood open and it sounds like it’s coming from under the car. So that could be the trans, or could be exhaust, will get under there later to check.

Charcoal canister and fuel lines are all in as well, no pics but not much to see. The old hoses were all petrified as well. Fuel line wasn’t as bad, I didn’t remember ordering that but it was a “while you‘re in there” and was a quick swap.

Also hunting that oil leak from the P/S pump area. It looks like it’s coming from the lower front timing cover behind the oil pump, will do a little more looking.

Shot of what I thought was the source of my whistle. Clamp was loose here, alas.

Tires dirty and trail pinstripes - 6N04 to 6N09 today. Great views of Leona Valley, the desert, and Bouquet Canyon reservoir. Lunch on the tailgate with my son. Yes @baldilocks, still have the running boards. I’m 02-poor at the moment. :) Great day out on the trail!

Bent running boards are more difficult to remove.

Update on my rattle-whistle - looks like I found it, was the cover on the first cat converter. One of the tabs has rusted through and was making this rattle whistle noise at about 1800 rpm when in gear only. This binder clip is keeping my sanity until I can get under there with some JB Weld and fix it more permanently :)
