12 or 13, either way those are small nuts.

drove back from the North coast in 100 degree weather with some pretty substantial climbs on highway 101

Coolant temp never got above 203 :)

The real test will be next time I drive up highway 80 to Donner Pass.

But my nuts don't seem to have change drastically in size.

That is correct
Joey, somehow I missed that Wit's End had this modified by Landtank clutch...I just ordered one. I've had a new blue clutch for several years now, after my OEM black hub seized up. At that time, the choices were to:
1.) run it as it came; or
2.) Pop it open and adjust temp; or
3.) Pop it open and replace OEM oil with heavier oil: or
4.) Pop it open, adjust the temp and replace with heavier oil

I chose option 3, mainly because at the time I sensed a lot of confusion and disagreement as to proper method to adjust the temp. IIRC, Tools R Us & Landtank had 2 different ideas as to how this should be done. And I had little confidence that I could adjust temp correctly. Being that I have a '94 (OBD 1), scan guage is not available to run continuously. I have done the RT mod to my temp gauge, so it would give more accurate idea of engine temp.

But, I just have not been satisfied since with blue clutch and temp gauge mod - it seems to be running hotter than it should, especially with any load or incline. And on a recent run in hot weather, running the AC made it worse. So rather than trying to adjust my existing clutch, I'll try a clutch, modified by Landtank, who has the experience to do it correctly. I'm hoping for improvement and will give feedback. I can always keep my existing as a spare.

3FE is a completely different clutch.

so does the 3fe typically even need a modified clutch to reduce cooling temps or it is generally safe enough without any modifications to the fan clutch?
