It's probably been asked I did a search and came up empty.
Pulled into work this morning and pop!

So I need to buy new tires today and I want know what the biggest tires I could get away with. I am running new 265s right now.

Going to look at tires right now please help me fellow mudders!

if you're not heavily loaded you may be able to fit 315/75-16 (34.6") with no lift, on stock rims.

I had some minor rubbing after doing exactly that. 1" mr gasket spacer up front, and airlift bags in the rear fixed that, esp when I'm more heavily laden. Also, some minor minor trimming of the rear mudflap area.

285's will fill your wheel well very nicely w/o performance issues - outside your speedo being off w/o the correction gear. You're asking for a lot of rubbing with much larger...and yes this has been asked plenty of times. At least you tried searching before asking.

Thanks guys for all the responses. It always amazes me just what a strong community we have here. God bless all of you.

Thanks for asking, I had the same question and didn't find a definitive answer searching either.

Damn - that tire has a lot of tread left - that sucks man!

There's biggest tires that fit.

And there's biggest tires that fit without costing you more money down the road.

Stick with 33s in your preferred width (I'm partial to the skinnies) and the only thing else you need is the speedo gear so that everything is good.

Go bigger and you'll soon be adding a lift, gears, etc, none of which is bad, it's just that it costs $$$.

Performance is minimally affected and you'll still fit in most garages.

Hey, don't knock the guy for finally starting a thread with something that sounds like a search term. The added links to old threads will make this valuable in helping connect it all together.

It's the internet, it's all good.

Didn't knock him for starting the thread. tell me where I said that. I was making a bit of a joke about that fact that he and another guy "searched" and could not find anything. Lighten up, boys.

Because opinions never change right

go back a not too many years and people would be saying go buy the ome 2.5 to fit 33s.

Not so much... I have seen 285s recommended as a "no problem" replacement tire for stock, since I have been on here and I have been here since day 1 of the 80 series section. Way back then, IIRC, there were a couple guys running 35s on stock suspension (Tyler?). They reported some rubbing on high speed bumps, or with articulation at Tim Hortons...

Don't even sweat it. I would buy you all a beer if you lived in my neck of the woods.

MY TRUCK.webp

This is my truck with 285/75R16 tires...no spacers...I think it fills the wheels well nicely, the speedo is off about 4mph...so at 55mph, I am doing about 59mph...just being aware of this helps. I didn't change any gears as I change tires back and forth quite a bit between these and my stock tires....these are a bit noisy. Loss of power is not really noticeable, but I don't push my truck hard in the first place, so I wouldn't be too aware of...Land Cruisers definitely aren't fast and furious unless you're talking about fuel consumption. Mileage really didn't change too much either...I go through a tank a week either way.

For what it's worth- I ran 305's (wide 33's) on a tired sagging stock suspension. I wheeled it once, albeit a fire road in Yosemite, with no rubbing.

Flank I discovered why my search came up with jack $&@"! I used the google search instead of the search at the top of the forum. See my illustration.

My new to me 80 has 35's. The difference in the speedo from stock is exactly 10%. Not that big of a deal.

The 55 is about 15% from stock tires to 33's. A bit of a drag on hills, but hell, I'm not in a hurry.

:meh:

A while back, before I stared removing and trimming stuff, I wheeled 305s fairly requently on my tired stocker springs before I got my 255/85s. They stuffed very nicely, no issues or damage, no trimming. On the flat, never had any rubbing at full turn.
