I love it. I like that the quarter panels are protected and you have a step bar for it. For my preference I would put the tire on the left side and the ladder on the right. It also looks like you can add an attachment to the ladder as well. Can it carry a steel wheel with 37 in tire? Looks stout, did it rattle or bang at all? Great job J.

M, I build my stuff tight.. I use the IPOR spindles... Tough as HELL.. I'd put a 40" on them and not look back. NO RATTLES HERE.. ask Jas @ CY or Finnyfam60..

I can configure whatever you want, within reason.... Weight and/or space limitations.

I built the ladder receiver to hold a (20 qt cooler/or 3- 5gallon jerry cans) OR an optional BBQ..

If I start building bumpers and whatnot. I have 4 vendors that I will use as my suppliers.. if they are not willing or interested, I will supply for that area...

Anyhow, let's stay in touch and see if I can get you squared away once I get my shop back and operable.

Sounds like a plan J.

I want one too... And so it begins.

Today started a bit slow. There was heavy fog, a few accidents and I got lost on the way to my friend James' place. He lives off the grid and the gps took me 15 miles away from where I should have been.
By the time I got there his car was on the lift getting it's transmission swapped. Then we had to load 7 bales of hay for some guy who bought some from him.

On the bright side, I finally got to use a plasma cutter. I must admit, I was addicted to it from the first cut. Here are some pics, sorry I couldn't take more, I was too dirty and busy to keep stopping.

Here it is after I took apart all the hardware, power washed it and did my first cut. James did the left I did the right, then we decided I should do the rest.

This is what it looks like now after spending hours grinding the cuts. I got metal shavings everywhere.

Dropped the old axle, we're not going to be able to modify the old sway bar, so I need to either get an 80 sway bar or do without.

Here's the old and the new

Where we left it for tonight. To be continued on Tuesday.

On a different note, he has some double cardan drive shafts that came off an old tundra. We might try to modify them to use for my front drive shaft, this way I would be able to fix my caster problem without a cut and turn. We're also going to reweld the front leave spring hangers.

M, Looks good brother. I have a DC on the front and rear of Goss. I still need a Cut n Turn on the front... IMO...

Keep it up.

I forgot to add this yesterday. Not welded just placed where it's going to go.

ForumRunner_20140302_185109.jpg
It's real close to the brake line bracket

looking good! Are you gonna keep the shock mounts on the axle?

for now, only because it was a BITCH grinding the accessories off. I need this ready by K2 and James is doing me a favor by letting me use his lift. He has other cars he needs to work on.

James had a sweet shop. Freaking jealous.

Sent from my Galaxy S4.

Dude, you have no idea, he has all the toys we wish we had. 3 tractors, a boat, 5 vehicles, 3 ATVs, 2 horses, some donkeys, dogs, cats and a log cabin. Where we are working is part of his barn. He was a master tech at Toyota, I guess it pays good to know hybrids.

Picked up the 80 sway bar tonight from Jason at cruiseryard, but the weather is expected to be bad and iced over tomorrow. So I'll be getting a very late start on a one hour drive to finish up the the axle swap. in other news looks like toyota will officially be getting a cumminsl in a few years. I figured they would have brought their hino engines over, but i guess it's all about name brand recognition in this market.

Mike- I'm awaiting an update on how it went today. Anxious to see Big Red with 4 discs!

Ran into some obstacles today. As some of you know Texas had a "severe" freeze last night, so this morning everyone had an excuse to drive like an idiot. I drove James' car back to him, but on the way lost over drive and first/second were slipping. So I did 4000rpms to go 55, that was not fun since he lives about an hour from me. We get there and all the ice on the trees were falling on us outside, not a show stopper, just annoying. Then a large tree in front of his house falls over and misses his roof and AC unit, but blocks the entry way. It's 1 pm by this point. We finally get into a work routine and do some measurements and decide 13* is the sweet spot for the perches to be welded. For one reason or another we had to re-tac that 5 times. Eventually it all started flowing and we decided to weld it. As James starts welding we run out of welding wire. The nearest store is 20 miles away. We go there and get some wire. Most of the afternoon is shot by this point. We get back and I cut the suspension mounts off and he welds the perches. We repack the leaf springs tight and flip the bolt holding them. By this point it's freezing again and dark, so we mount the axle and call it. To be finished next monday when we both have time off. all that's now left is brake lines and hand brake install. Now for some pictures

tacked in for mock up.

right before he ran out of wire.

What the inside welds look like. That's not the finished product, have better pic, just need to find it
20140304_170927.jpg

Had to take out that bolt and flip it and retighten the springs.
20140304_194402.jpg

Hanging on its own.

I'm beat right now, will post better pictures later.

Had to patch one of the creepy crawlers. Not as easy as 1 2 3 .

There's where the temporary plug was. The tire was also full of slime and needed a good cleaning on the inside.

That's some hard work isn't it. Good job man :D

Thanks Johnny for the support and answering a lot of my stupid questions. I honestly don't know how you do most of your projects in one day or one weekend. I'm gonna follow your advise and do away with the proportioning valve. I just bought new rear rotors and pads for the 80 axle and hope to be done with it by monday. I was supposed to be done last saturday but work interruptions, weather, tool malfunctions, murphy, illegal immigration, obamacare, Putin and Al Qaeda were all working against me. I'm not in town this weekend so monday is the only shot I have at getting it ready for round up. Was informed earlier that we're out of argon, so might not be able to weld sway bar mounts and reweld that front leaf spring hanger. All this translates to very light trails next weekend. Wish I had better pictures and a better write up, I'm usually too greasy to hold the camera and by the time I post up I'm too tired/ pissed off to do a coherent write up. Will do better next time.

On the proportioning valve. Let me clarify what I said in my post. I felt no need to add a proportioning valve with the FZJ80 rear axle. I did however retain the factory 60 series proportioning valve that is bolted to the bottom of the master cylinder from the factory. In fact I still have it, although I don't feel it's doing too much.
