Recently installed mine, ran the factory radio for a while and got tired of it. Figured the apple CarPlay and navigation would be useful. Like the OP I bought the pre-wired harness and took like 30 minutes to install. I think Sony is the only brand that offers a model with a volume knob.

I love not needing to plug my phone in now to connect the audio, and it will feel like a step back to have to start doing that even though I’m connecting into a modern head unit.

Chiming in for the opposite here—wired is the way to go for me. Everywhere I go, my phone is charged. I just used a $14 plug from Amazon to replace the cigarette lighter port.

Yes I’m going to add a similar option for the time when I’m on the road for a longer trip. But the bulk of my driving is 5m, 15m, 25m short trips so phone stays in pocket and no connectivity issues. I rarely run out of battery anyways. It will be good to have both options. The head unit in my pilot had to plug in for CarPlay and I Found my habit was to lazily avoid plugging in usually and use the Bluetooth connection. This way I get to be lazy and have the apple interface.

Or VLine. Works perfectly in my '03 for a lot less than the parts conversion. (But you're stuck with a worse screen.)

As @saucebox mentioned above, it's a Grom VLine. It's probably not as nice as a new Sony head unit, but it does update the OEM navigation system without having to do the whole "non-NAV conversion".

When designing a screen for the stereo, putting a knob would require significantly shrinking the screen size to still fit in a standard double din slot. The rocker switches allow a small area at the bottom to serve that function and keep the screen as large as possible.

Knobs don't have to be huge. I'd be fine having them the size of the old equalizer knobs.

Knobs are encoder handles for 200lb gorillas with fat fingers. Little buttons are a pain.

I agree that I would prefer a knob as well. I have to brace my hand on the dash just below the radio and then use a finger to adjust the audio and I don’t like that. Having said all that, I would take a larger screen over a knob if I had to choose. Most of these stereos have remote controls, maybe that’s a decent compromise, I don’t know. I bought my head unit used with no remote so I don’t speak from experience.

I just ordered a 3 knob heater control from a local wrecking yard - under $200 including the wire pigtails. Will be replacing my ‘02 Nav unit with this new control and adding a Pioneer 4400NEX which has wireless CarPlay. Based on my experience with CarPlay in my wife’s minivan and my 05 Pilot, and the Bluetooth unit installed in my LX, I am willing to pay a little more for the wireless CarPlay. I loved adding the CarPlay unit to my Pilot and am really looking forward to this mod in my LX. Having backup camera, navigation, etc.. in one screen and the controls at my fingertips is definitely going to be a rad addition. Here’s hoping I don’t screw up the install! (Although, based on the extensive notes and tips in the Pre-03 thread, if I get stuck there is help available).

I want to do similarly to my 2002 LX470.
I need 3 things:
1- thread describing how to delete the NAV
2- locate a non-Nav climate control panel with pigtails
3- locate the new panel with CarPlay

Anything like that needs to be as close to your line of sight of the road as possible. Y’all can brag about watching movies on it all you want, but you’re endangering the lives of your families who depend on you for safety, and other drivers too.

On my 2001 LX the screen is pretty high but, I can't stand a double din spaceship this sits low in the dash.

I agree with the driving and trying to watch a screen. I have never watched a video on my Kenwood driving or sitting still even though mine will play them off DVD or an USB flash card.

I could understand if we we talking about an 80 series, but in a 100 series, there’s not very much dashboard above where the screen is located. Where are you suggesting that it should be installed?

You are aware that CarPlay is a simplified user interface to a limited subset of applications on your iPhone? I don’t recall seeing any movie applications under CarPlay. Although that doesn’t mean head units that support CarPlay can’t play movies, it just won’t be through CarPlay. I think I’ve done it twice, on the OEM system, in the 13 years I’ve owned the vehicle. Once in the driveway (parked) to see if it worked in the first week of ownership, and once sitting (parked) in the parking lot waiting out a HS baseball rain delay.
