Or you could move your screen and make room for a new deck like I initially did. I have all parts if you want.

Check it out here:

I just went through your write up. Probably more work than I am interested in tanking on right now. Thanks for the offer.

All of those CarPlay screens and a lot of the ones that come with new cars are installed way too low on the dashboard, which is a distraction for your eyes. Anything like that needs to be as close to your line of sight of the road as possible. Y’all can brag about watching movies on it all you want, but you’re endangering the lives of your families who depend on you for safety, and other drivers too.

Who was bragging about watching movies while driving? Voice activated navigation using Google Maps, easy access to Spotify, voice activated calling... that’s the good stuff. Don’t forget having a backup camera screen in a handy position.
I’ve got my Lexus navigation system as up to date (2015) as possible and it doesn’t hold a candle to Google telling me traffic is heavy and suggesting an alternate route. I suppose someone could add one of those cheap parking brake bypass buttons so video plays during driving but like you said - that’s dangerous.
I’m also really looking forward to having climate controls that are mechanical, not digital. Now that I’ve got the new controls on order I am allowing myself to realize just how inconvenient it is to use the digital screen controls!

Can someone explain how the parking brake comes into play?

Most (all?) units won't play video unless the parking brake is engaged. Safety thing, of course—the parking brake being engaged generally means you're not moving. Unless you're my wife or mother, but that's a different story

But it can/could be bypassed by installing a bypass, as @chogunn mentions.

99 TLC. I got XAV-AX100 (NOT the 1000 - there was a feauture or cost diff. think it was older w/o volume knob). No amp booster or woofer replacement. New speakers in doors. Sony has a DSO feature that makes the sound feel like it is coming from dash level vs. speaker level. Huge difference in sound. Sound was plenty loud at 50-75% crank. I too required a volume button. High Tech shop told me NOT to replace woofers due to pitch levels or something and that the new ones would affect it poorly and possible fail on those levels. I strongly suggest you look at the DSO level feature. About 10 equalizer pre-sets.No one else that I saw has it and this is more affordable than others.
It has the car play and Android Auto, Only gripe, A.A. is a pain in the arss to link. Believe me I have spent hours on it with Crutchfield and Google. Very inconsistent. I just use phone on my redneck mount attached to air vent.

All said about $400, easy single din setup. Because I was a newbie installer I can't recommend buying thru Crutchfield high enough. They have tech support where I talked to the same guy (even late on Saturdays.) Price was same as Amazon, so go direct.

Feel free to DM me because I researched 50 plus models and wanted to stay in the 300 budget but moved it up a bit to 400. Also I would call Crutchfield before you buy and they can provide so much guidance for your model. Can send you pics if you want.

One other advice for all is never put your bluetooth media volume all the way up (75% is good). It can blow something. This is from a tech shop that sells the highest end stuff in Austin.

Did you bypass the factory amp then? Just do head unit to door speakers?

I have had my step for a couple of years but I went with the pioneer 4100 nex with us with (I like to charge my phone). It has Android auto, apple carplay and HD radio. What set it apart from other options at the time was the screen tilt function. The Arizona sun glares off the seats so being able to articulate the screen has been awesome

Don't forget the ability to download Google offline maps. The benefit of the parking break bypass is if you want to add a screen for second row passenger so they can watch movies

We used existing set up to original amp with wiring harness adapter that was $15. Plenty powerful. Give it a try before getting another amp. Only needed a new one if I was to get the big box woofer. We had a birds nest from older owner and basically went to the stock setup
Hope that answers it.
