Maybe I'm searching wrong but I couldn't find anything. I'm going to get a set of front seat shoulder belts for my 1974 FJ40 that attach to the roll bar. I've seen them on CCOT and I've seen them on CoolCruisers but I'm not sure if one is better than the other or if there is a better option out there. I want normal looking belts like you'd find in your car (not the race kind). Where would you get them? Is there a preferred vendor?

Thanks again,
Joel

I ordered from here: https://www.gotbelts.com/ - they have more choices of buckles, similar prices

my belts have held up fine since 2004 - the passenger belt has rubbed on the grey cover for the tank filler neck and is starting to fray - as rarely as I have a passenger in the truck, I am not too concerned - as I will be redoing the interior soon, I may get a new belt

The one I ordered from ccot were short and you have to extended fully to insert in buckle. One of these days will pull for something else. Didn't work out for me.

I have the CCOT's and they are hit and miss. What that means, sometimes they lock-up for no reason and they pin you into your seat as you are trying to get the mechanism to release, and at times they seem to work as designed. I've figured out that if it locks up unnecessarily, I just whack the release mechanism with my left elbow, it will release.

Not exactly what I had in mind when I bought them, but sometimes you just 'gotta make do' with what you have.

Thanks for all of the replies - anybody have an idea of what size we need? The seatbelt places have them listed by size. I may go with one of them and buy the roll bar adapter from CCOT.

I found my answer, I think from SOR:
"Aftermarket Front Fj40 Seat Belt -
Fits 1/76-1/79 FJ40 - Black Retractable belt is 115 inches long in a 4 x 4 x 3 plastic housing - Receptacle is 9 inches long and is protected by a hard plastic sleeve - Has mounting holes for a maximum of 1/2 inch (13mm) hardware"

Anyway to rebuild or replace the retractor mechanism on the stock belts for my '78?? Toyota part or number?

my roll bar has the attachment point welded to it

don't overthink on length of the belt - as long as whatever mechanism fully retracts, a typical length belt should be fine

I simply ordered the regular-sized 3-point seatbelt from "gotbelts.com"

I bought mine from Cruiser Corps, part #528-104, and they are just okay. They catch too easily when pulling them out to buckle, so I have to pull out very slow and steady to avoid that.

I had the aftermarket set from CCOT for about 8 years, just recently replaced them with ones from wescoperformance. I think they all seem to be from the same manufacturer, the only difference is some places have more options for buckle styles.

CCOT ones worked fine, the only thing I didn't like is when I had the top off for a few months the buckles and belts faded almost instantly. Both sets I have seem to be very sensitive to the orientation of the retractor, if it's off even slightly from vertical the belts will lock up when pulling it out. It took a lot of adjusting and testing to get it just right, and even then once in a while it will still catch if you pull too fast.

The one thing I did like about the CCOT belts is the buckle mounting was very stiff, meaning you could fasten the belts with one hand without having to hold the buckle. On the newer set I bought the buckle straps run through a plastic stiffener, which holds the buckle at the right height but the end of the buckle still flops around. Also, having the button on the end of the buckle is slightly more convenient than having it on the side when you're sitting, then you can use your thumb to press the button instead of having to use your finger

I talked to a guy from seatbeltplanet.com. Their belts are made in America. He said they used to supply Cool Cruisers up to a few years ago. Cool Cruisers seat belts are now from China. He said the have FJ Belts that come with all of the connection stuff but they don't have it online yet.
Here are the product numbers:

5031

Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40 1972-78 Dr/Pass 3Pt Retract

$239.95

5032

Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40 1972-78 Dr/Pass 2Pt Retract

$149.95

5033

Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40 1972-78 Rear 2Pt Retract

$149.95

5034

Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40 1972-78 Rear 2Pt Non Retract

$49.95

I got a good deal on the belts (cheaper than listed above). They also have a ton of colors (I went with an OD Green - it's the leftover Army in me). I'll let you know how they work out once I get them.

Thanks,
Joel

DARN!....I should have done more research back in May. I would have much rather bought a product made in the Good Ole USA, than from China.

I live, and I learn! :censor:

Yes somebody please comment on which belts they prefer and do not 'catch'. I have sourced both from down in Colombia (guessing chinese) and here on amazon.com for my trucks but have yet to find my "go to" aftermarket belt that does not catch and is high quality.

I ordered a spool of tan seat belt webbing off Ebay and took my original seat belts apart and put the new webbing in myself. I have an upholstery sewing machine so it was easy to sew the old metal pieces onto the new material. I also put a little extra tension on the roller spool spring while I was in there. Works like a charm. I will say that the Chinese seat belt web material isn't as thick and bulky as the OEM.

My fj isn't running so I haven't hooked up my belts yet but I may do it and bounce around a little to see how they feel, pull and catch. I'll post after I do.

Joel
