The 2f in my fj60 has a blown head gasket and maybe other problems im unaware of. Im not interested in rebuilding the engine so if anybody wants to buy one on the cheap let me know. What Im asking all my bay area brethren is to help me source a cummins 4bt to drop in my 60, everything in a 200-300 mile radius of SF ill consider. Thankyou.

How are u going to get it registered in CA. I thought the diesel had to come in a vehicle inbthe samenweight range
I think that as long as the engine is newer than the model year of your vehicle then it should be fine, i dont know anything about that whole weight thing.

Yup, last I heard about the new CARB rules was that this was not an option. Best bet is to talk with Georg at Valley Hybrid (@orangefj45) to see what your options are.

There are plenty of cruisers and other SUVs/Trucks cruising around CA that are "legal"........

Does your 60 have a lift?
The 4BT is awful tall and will require at least 4" of lift.

What year is your 60? I am in the Bay Area and I am looking for a used 2f block back to the t-case. Let me know.

Have you driven a vehicle with 4BT in it? I suggest ear plugs.

These comments make me laugh, I have a vehicle that has a 4BT and you don’t need ear plugs or a kidney belt but I do have a vehicle that has a 6.0 LS3 and both are a good idea.

The 4BT engine by its self is noisier at idle and does vibrate more but driving down the road it’s no noisier than the common rail in my Dodge truck.

Good luck with your search @CruiserWeight the 4BT is a great option for a 60, I have one in my 55.

I confirmed that 4bt are in fact legal in california, but I also decided to opt out. id like a 12ht or a 1hdt but both are harder to find than a 4bt. Id go gas but id have to deal with the whole ecu unit and i refuse to just drop an old 350 in it. How difficult is it to retrofit an LS ecu unit in a FJ?

It's definitely not legal to register a 4BT in a FJ60. I've been to the referee a couple times so I think I know this game pretty well.

Same year or newer. Same vehicle class. Pretty simple.

The only diesel engines you can legally swap into a 60 series in CA are ones from cars or light duty trucks. That pretty much leaves your emissions-exempt options to a GM 6.2 found in 1500 Blazers, MB OM series, VW and maybe some odd Renault engine in Jeep Cherokees.

FYI in CA as of 2004

Light Duty (cars, 1/2 ton trucks and SUVs) is <8500 GVWR
Medium Duty trucks between 8500 and 9,999 lbs
Heavy Duty trucks 10,000 +

4bt engine is from a different class of vehicle. wont be able to reg. it in cali according to Carb rules. your best option is a 6bt because that came in same class.

Wrong. 6BT came in a 3/4+ ton (medium duty) vehicle. That engine is not allowed in a "light duty" vehicle.

Wrong. 4BTs only came in heavy duty vehicles

You sound like you're in over your head. It's not just adapting the wiring harness, it's making all the emissions systems play happily together so you can pass a referee to his satisfaction. And believe me in the bay area, you are still going to have a nightmare of a time smogging it even after it's refereed and has a BAR sticker on the door sill.

Glad to hear that I made you laugh, for one thing your eardrums are not connected to @CruiserWeight how would you know that he won't be annoyed by the noise of a 4bt? I would rather listen to a 12 valve 6BT all day than a 4BT and please don't compare your common rail Cummins when it comes to noise those things almost hum when they were new. You said yourself it's noisy why don't we let OP try it for himself and see what he thinks. You should get your ears checked or maybe get the wax cleaned out. Enjoy your Cummins @J Mack

I'm in the East bay @CruiserWeight if you decide you would rather fix that 2F let me know I could lend you a hand I also know a good machine shop in Oakley that does excellent work and he is fair with his prices.
