Safe Jumper Cable Sequence
1. Attach one Red clip to the Positive (+) terminal of the good battery.
2. Attach other Red clip to the Positive (+) terminal of the dead battery.
3. Attach one Black clip to the Negative (-) terminal on the dead battery.
4. Attach other Black clip to an unpainted metal surface, away from the battery, on the car with the Good battery.

Let me catch up with a few things and I'll work on it.

The recommended way I showed minimizes sparks, possible ignition/explosion of built up battery gasses, may help to reduce damage to electronics and lends some credibility should damage occur, you can always say that you did it the recommended way. :) You'd be surprised the people I've encountered who didn't get the pos to pos piece of this.

Throughout my life I've done it and have seen it straight battery to battery.
Battery gases out in the open?
I've seen people smoke while siphoning gasoline out of their cars, out in the open of course.

Why is this even being discussed?

What's wrong with the normal way of attaching jumper cables? (+) to (+) and (-) to (-)

"Positive to positive, negative to ground", where the "ground" means the chassis of the dead car.

This is because of the build up of gases from the battery. AGMs greatly reduce this risk but not impervious to it. Generally if I'm jumping a wet cell battery I'll make sure to ground to the frame of the dead car somewhere.

Exactly why I made my World's Most Expensive Jumper Cables. Solenoid activated :flipoff2:

It's pretty rare with current battery technology. I use to hear about happening all the time. I haven't heard of an incident in over a decade.

Was trying to think of something I would like laser etched on my bracket. It was this or a cuddly gimp. ;)

It doesn't happen much but that arc-spark issue raises eyebrows when I'm jumping my ancient truck and some state of the art, drive by wire, compu-car.

Ooooh! I need my CSI: 100 Acre Woods avatar etched on there!

With modern cars having the battery inside the trunk, there is no bare metal to attach the negative wire to.
I'm too stubborn to change my ways.

When I go off roading I always take the jumper cables with me. If safety is what you;re looking for, then don;t ask for my help.
If you don't want to be stranded in the middle of nowhere, then I'm your salvation.
My cables, my rules. No conspiracy theory here, no Y2K, no zombie apocalypse, no condoms if you're stranded. Oops, wrong thread.

Hey, if I'm stranded, spark away, no worries, I'm running AGM! :D
