Too far north. Too far east.
Didn't get very far. Broke transfer case 40 miles south of San Felipe. Dragged back to San Felipe by a BajaNomad this afternoon. Holed up at a commercial camp north of town. There is a shop near the camp. They open on Tuesday. I will see them and hope they can help. The issue will be the part. Marlin sells the solution.

Having "total" or full-length splines means that more splines are in contact with the Coupler of your Dual Case Unit. This is important because the spline contact between a t/case input and a Dual Case Coupler is the weak-link of the Dual Case Unit. Therefore, by using a Marlin Crawler Total-Spline gear set you are also minimizing the risk of stripping out the Coupler of your Dual Case Unit.

This pretty much sums up why. Now I just need to figure how to get it here.

didn't you know WHY is is part of the prep for Baja? they have heads with more than max milling!

I would shave my head, but I don't like the look with beards.

EPIPHANY!

The crawl box and the transfer case use the same input gear. Either the transfer gear is striped or most likely the coupling in the adapter is.

Solution! Move good gear from the crawl box to the transfer case, pull the adapter and crawl box, install as a single ... and hope there is a shop in San Felipe that can lengthen my rear shaft.

Then I can drive home in 2 WD.

sorry your trip got cut short. glad you are safe and looks like you can get back. let us know if you need any help.

Eat your heart out Mike.

I'll bite - what the heck is that?

And where is San Felipe?

San Felipe is about two hours south of the border on the Gulf side. That was a Bakepacker apple cinnamon muffin. Mikie loves my Bakepacker.

Truck is back together. I will head home in the morning, less one transfer case. Driveshaft had to be lengthened 8" and has quite a wobble. I hope the vibration doesn't slow me down.

Good to hear that you are mobile again. Hope the vibration doesn't keep you down :)

Great news! Hope the DS does OK...

I'm sure the thought has occurred, but what if..........

Driveshaft is very unbalanced. I've stopped in Phoenix. A shop will retube in the morning. I need to remember to take pics.

I'm sure the thought has occurred, but what if..........

What if what? Nothing has gone wrong and I actually made it down to the 28th parallel and had a great time?

Breaking down, going broke and the added stress is part of the vacation plan you say? Yiikes!!

Glad you made home safe....

Damn Jon.... Sorry to hear.

I know how important this trip is to you every year....

And no Maynard? Man, he must be getting lazy these days... CTO work is hard.

Glad you made it home safe and we didn't have to send out a search party.

Wouldn't have needed to search very hard. Ash knew exactly where I was. Before I left I bought a Delorme inReach satellite communicator.

You can go to this page and see where I sent public messages from:

Zoom out to see where I broke, and the camp I spent three days at.

For obvious reasons I don't have many pics. Here are a few.

The splice made to the driveshaft to get me home. It was very unbalanced and I had the shaft retubed in Phoenix.

Where I broke. It was a nice spot. It was also smack in the middle of the trail. Thankfully, I only had three jeeps come down that had to detour around my carcass.

Palapa camp at Pete's Camp north of San Felipe. $15/night. There were showers available for $2, and a restaurant with good food. Cerveza was $3US.

San Felipe is known for having crazy low tides. On the first day I was there it exceeded 5 meters.

Low tide as seen from shore.

High tide.
