I'm just going to attach the crappy drawing I made. The idea is to relocate the third member on an axle above the horizontal center of the axle, adding ground clearance. The vehicle would need some lift to make it fit but it would add TONS of clearance. Worth it? Has anyone done it? Just wondering.

Have a good one guys

Google Atomic Axles

Essentially its an IRS style diff and shafts made rigid. Could be made but I doubt it'd be worth the effort.

Looks like I've been living under a rock! Thanks for showing me those. Not QUITE what I had in mind, but very close. Mine would be completely flat bottomed. Still very cool tho!

So instead of 2 or 3 U joints, this would introduce 4 additional joints into the equation.

The portal type diff is a better solution IMHO. Could it work, yes, would it be super heavy consider all of the added material, yes.

Looks like its an idea that's been around a long time. I'm not surprised. I've had other ideas that were already on the market, I'm sure we all have. There's not much new. When somebody invents something you can usually trace it back to *something*.

Seems to me that the real breakthrough here wouldn't be in making that type of axle, the real breakthrough would be making a 3rd member that was flat! :p

You could argue that a portal axle adds additional gear sets. :meh:

One of the down sides of a Portal axle is the heat generated in the portal gearing at highway speeds. That combined with the additional gear reduction makes them less than ideal for a highway driven rig.

there is a leverage factor in the portal axle design too .. that must be heavy to hold the abuse ..

You could, but I don't see gear failures as much as I see U-joint failures.

x2 way to expensive...not worth it and only a 1 year warranty?

Bobby Long built a pair of axles like this years ago. Way before Atomic even dreamed up anything remotely close. On a mini none the less.

Its all been done boys.

what would be the point of all the extra moving parts be and no gain in ground clearance not well though out.if you trace thier roots the us military has pretty much done everything you can think of.most didnt pan out and were scrapped.they had soa and 4 wheel steer in ww2.plus ifs and 4 wheel steer.how about a hydraulic motor at each wheel then ground clearance would be almost unlimited.
