The transfercase lever mounting boss for the 442 transmission is located on the transmission case almost directly above the planetary gearset. Because of this orientation, planetary whine is transmitted into the cabin via the transfercase shift lever. This is particularly aparent in 1st gear. Ordinarily this would not be noticed except for the fact that they did too good a job quieting down the rest of the vehicle....

In November 93 Toyota changed the design of the lever mounting bracket to incorporate isolating bushings. This eliminates almost all the noise. If yours was built prior to 11-93 you can retro-fit the later bracket and associated bits. The required parts add up to about 80 bucks.

If your noise is this noise it is not a mechanical problem just a by-product of the commercial transmission in the vehicle.
