I never said this swap wouldn’t work for LHD vehicle what I said was the setup doesn’t look like it’ll work meaning the inner cooler and piping. 😎
Not laid out the way it is, no. It's a matter of engine bay Tetris. I think we're all just thinking out loud. Most of the real Toyota purist naysayers dropped out a few pages back. ;)

I don’t think I would take out a good running 1FZ
But I have a dead one and this swap is very appealing to me. 😎

Don't forget the 1HD-FTE is still a turd unless its fixed up. It only takes 20,000 plus labor at a certain shop to make it worth it. 🤓

Back on topic. I think this will be a desirable swap in the future. Especially if theres more aftermarket support added.

Yeah, I'm coming from the point of view of having a runner that's getting on. It's just a matter of time before something expensive comes up, so I'm weighing options while I have time to think it over.

I am already making plans to have my car registered in Florida since I cannot have nice things in California.

Diesels are exempt from inspection on 1997 and older vehicles. Plenty have went this route on the 80 in CA.

The law states you cannot remove any emission related devices from the the engine you swap in.
Yes, this engine can be fitted into the 80 if it is in the same configuration as it was sold new in the donor car.
In order to register the gas 80 as a diesel it must pass a DMV inspection and be given a diesel pink slip.

So yes, you are correct when stating many people have done a diesel swap in CA and nobody has any issues with it... as long as it is done legally.

So California has DMV employees inspecting vehicles down to this level?
That seems so foreign to me.
Our people generally know a car from a truck, and that old stuff might not have all the digits.

I told my dmv I wanted to register a 40. It’s on Dana 60’s with a ford truck frame and a Cummins 12 valve.
They gave me papers for my 40.

But Ca people would know how the donor car’s engine was configured?

And they take pride in calling down the thunder with the "failed" stamp. Same here in the PRC. If you would have heard the douchecanoe up in Denver declare, "You'll never make it. Nobody's a good enough mechanic to get past me," you'd have a mouthful of vomit, too.

Correct, legally you may not remove smog equipment on the diesel or any vehicle, that is a federal law beyond just CA. Just look at all the aftermarket diesel vendors/shops getting HEFTY fines from the EPA. Once the swap is done and re-classified by DMV, what the owner does (you) with the smog equipment is up to him, legal or not. It will NO longer be included in the biennual smog inspection program, and this was my point. So the issue with having this option in CA is mute and there is nothing stopping you or anyone else in here. Modification to emission control devices will just have to be done after the fact. It really is a non issue. And no, it is NOT required to have an obd2 check once it runs on diesel for the domestic 80 series, despite what PIP tried correcting me on.

So, go for it. 👍

My statement stands and is correct.
It’s correct if you’re installing a pre 97 Diesel in a pre 97 Rig.
It will not apply to this new diesel power plant.
The smog requirements follow the new transplant motor, no matter whether it’s gas or diesel.
I do wish you were right !

So if you install a new engine in a pre 97 vehicle, can you not later delete what you want* because the vehicle, as a pre 97, is exempt from inspection?

*ignoring the federal law. I’m already a felon multiple times over every day, probably.

I haven't researched the Califonria thing extensively for myself. But I've sold 80 series Cummins swap kits for nearly 15 years. I've had several long discussions with Jonathan Ward of TLC about California emissions requirements and even the liability of doing an install in California to an out of state cruiser for an out of state customer is problematic in that state.

I know many of my parts are running in cruisers in California, but I don't believe any of them are registered in California.
