argh! unresolved engine whine, now resolved.

For a while now my cruiser has made a whine noise when the truck is in gear, foot is on the brake, and the A/C is disengaged.

Thought it may have been the A/C clutch since when the A/C kicks in the noise stopped. Needed to replace that belt anyway so I just cut her off. Still whines. That eliminates the compressor, clutch, and A/C idler pulley. Replaced the A/C idler pulley and belt anyway.

Replaced all belts and the upper idler pulley. Still whines.

It'll only do it when it is hot. It only happens on low RPMs like when in D with foot on brake. If you let off the brake but don't apply the gas it may whine for a little but until the engine speed gets higher.

It does not have any correlation to steering, except that moving the steering wheel brings the RPMs up so it can make it stop.

I'm at a loss here. Water pump? Alternator?

Today when troubleshooting again, I put the truck in D and the parking brake on and a couple bricks in front of the tires and tried to find it. It almost sounded like it was coming from UNDER the truck but it wasn't doing it enough today for me to track it down and I didn't want to get under the truck with just the parking brake keeping her from rolling over me.

Anyone have any tips?

That was my next guess, but I'm going to be upset if it goes the way it has been and I install a new water pump and its still there!

Exhaust systems can make noises. I know my muffler did, but it was more of a whistle.

I definately do have the exhaust whistle that you refer to but this isn't it. It's definately a squealing pulley type sound.

other possibiliteis

You probably have alredy looked at these noise makers.

80 series power steering pumps can generate whines. The will do it when they begin to get hot but they will also do it at the times you describe if they have not been serviced. I do a B&G flush every year and it is amazing what a difference it has made. I run 35" SSRs on the trail and 33" Truxus daily and the steering gets a real workout.

You said you replaced the AC belts. Is is possible that you did not use factory belts for the alternator and AC? Gates, a good quality belt, is not a solid v-belt. If any belt other than a solid V such as the factory will whine as it goes over the idler pulley. The idler pulley on the 80 runs on the iniside of the belt. If it is not solid on the back side it will whine like mad.

I know these are obvious but sometimes the obvious helps.

Use a stethoscope or wood dowell to isolate the source.

Even a 1" diameter wood closet rod will work. CAREFULLY place one end against all the various potential noise makers and your ear against the other end. The rod transmits the noise wonderfully and may allow you to stop guessing.

I used OEM belts for just that reason.

I read about the PS but the symptoms didn't seem to exactly match what I was experiencing. I was probably thinking too hard about it though.

I'll find a 1" dowel and someone to stand on the brakes for me so I don't run myself over. :)

I forgot how quiet the stock belts were until I changed the old gates belts out for OEM last week. Realy noticed a difference.

My 94 has a whine which people at work say they can hear me coming down the street because it sounds like a loud sewing machine. I'm running gates belts. CDan I will be calling you for replacements.

The whining sound of my 1FZ-FE DOHC engine came about after a mechanic had wrongly re-installed the power steering pump of my engine. Though we were able to temporarily repair the pump, my engine now has this whining sound that nobody knows were it is coming from.

Sorry, but instead of helping you out with your problem, I am now sharing my own problem with you and the est of the group.

Regards....... jack

OK all, here is more data.

The whine only happens when the DRIVETRAIN is warm. I idled in the driveway with me under the truck and the GF on the brakes for about 20 minutes and nothing. After about 5 minutes of driving, we heard it. I had her pull over and I jumped out and got under the truck. The sound seems to be coming from either the output of the transmission or the center differential itself. I had her put the center in N and the tranny in D and the sound would stop.

Any ideas?! I haven't seen these symptoms reported before.

Josh,
I had a similar whine, but it was from the front pinion bearing. It would only whine when on the go. Don't know..could be the same or a bearing in the center diff/transfer case.

Is you center diff licking up when the whine occurs??
Just curious.

Well, this would be nearly the exact opposite symptom, because it happens only when NOT moving or when starting to move.

Now, thinking more about this, when the vehicle is stationary and the transmission is in drive, isn't the only moving part in the transmission within the torque converter?

Sounds like this approach could narrow it down pretty well.

For example:

1) Does it do it in D, TC in 4hi (GF foot on the brake), you under the chassis?

2) Does it do it in P, TC in 4hi, you under the chassis?

Etc...
