I'm thinking of getting an ARB locker that is used and older but it's a good deal. It was once installed in the front axle of a 40 series. I'd like to put it in the rear axle of my 40. I'm seeing, though, that there are different part numbers for front and rear in the 40 for ARBs. Does that mean that if this one was once installed in the front it won't work in the back? I'm hoping there are just a couple different parts I can buy to make it work for the rear axle l, but I don't know much about it. Also, it's an older model, a 3 bolt instead of a 5 bolt??? Again hoping someone can educate me here.

Not that you ask but an air locker in the front is good and put a limited slip in the back, unless you are a rock crawler.
Having an air compressor on board is very handy for tires - way faster than putting on chains.

That means that it could be a full-float ONLY model and will ONLY work in a 4x front or a 4x rear when equipped with a full-float rear axle not found on US models. You cannot (easily/affordably) retrofit a FF model into a Semi-Float axle. That said, the semi-float variants (RD153) for example will fit front or rear, though it's not commonly done as the full float (RD142) is stronger so most don't run them that way. Short of a model number or pictures, you're faced with guessing.

Old page (we've been playing with ARB's for 30+ years now) but here are some of the older part number for the LC 9.5" diffs:

Thanks for the info. Very helpful.

I don't want to compromise the street ability of my 40 so a selectable locker is the way I wanna go. I don't have power steering so I'm not sure how feasible even an ARB is in the front diff.

If you don’t have power steering a ARB on the front is a real bitche to steer. I have ARBS on front and rear and love it.

Front and rear in my 40 also. When you really need it, the front air locker is like an "easy" button (when crawling up steep rocky ledges as an example). But you want to use it judiciously and sparingly, you can break stuff if you're not careful. And has been said, steering can be difficult and slow to respond with the front locked. FWIW, I don't have power steering and still feel the front locker is way worth it. The beauty of the ARB is that it is (nearly) instant on and off, so you can switch back and forth on a given line between climbing and steering.

Totally feasible and the only locker I would run in the front of a 40 without power-steering is a selectable option (ARB or Eaton)
