Hi All-

I've just picked up an ARB front bumper for an 80 series for $60 off craigslist.

It was damaged in an accident and has superficial rust on several spots.

The damage occurred on the passenger side of the truck and appears to have bent both the bottom portion of the brush guard tubing (1st level beneath headlights when installed) as well as the bumper itself.

Before I spend money to have it bent back into place and sand blasted/powder coated, I wanted to get some opinions on whether it is sane to throw some money at a damaged bumper like this.

Should I just bend it myself with hi-lift and hit it with POR15?

Not seeing any pics

Based on the pics I don't really see any need to pay someone to refresh it as long as it mounts and it won't interfere with any components of the vehicle I would rock it as is fixing the paint and bending back what I need to. Great find! One of the wings is bent on mine where my wife drug a Citroen CV2 across a bridge that hit her.

Oh man, that's not a car I would want to face against a cruiser!

Thanks for the advice. Whatever I do, I am thinking powder coating may be a bit of a waste given the difficulties involved with touching it up.

Grab a BFH and have somebody with a dolly spot your forward side. Then start hammering it out to close. I wouldn't bother trying to get that thing perfect. I wouldn't powder coat either, just spray paint it and call it good for your $60. It might be to your benefit to leave it damaged, then people will think your crazy or a $hit driver. Either way they will be more apt to steer clear of you !

Bolt it on, if it's still straight, and if you ever get in an accident, maybe someone will buy you a brand new one!!

Better yet;

Delete this thread.

Bolt it on.

Go get in an accident and make it LOOK like it was the other guy's fault.

Buy a NEW bumper from ARB and bolt it on.

Sell the OLD bumper for $60.

New owner:

Lather, rinse, repeat.

Eventually, we will ALL have new ARB bull bars for FREE!

That's how we REALLY think!

I smell a plot cooking.

For those you who have installed these in the past, anyone have some specs on the various fasteners used? Mine obviously is without.

Thanks,

Austin

Bolt it to the truck, hook a tow strap up to the bumper and a tree and slowly back up. It will pull itself out.

Is that pass side wing cracked at the weld above the "not recovery loop" ?

Agree. Bolt it up and see how much needs to be moved where. They dont bed back super easy but doable. If it didnt hit fenders and facia valance id just clean it up and paint it and rock as is.

Careful with the tugging in reverse or it could become an expensive bumper all of a sudden

Herculiner is $30 qt shipped on Amazon Prime and can be touched up indefinitely.

By the time you have it straightened out well enough to justify the co$t to powder coat it you might as well buy a new one.

cut those upper bars off ala T-17, straighten main wing, then refinish

Hell of a deal for $60. Won't spend the time (read: don't have the time) to reiterate what the other guys are saying but I agree - repaint it and rock it as is for as little money as possible.

Before I bought mine (new), I found one about 2 hours away. The guy wanted nearly $600 for it and the powder coat was in really sad shape. Didn't make sense at his price point and he wasn't much on negotiating!

Don't forget the after pics too.

I would not powder coat it. Powder coat is a pain to touch up when it does chip or get scraped.

Straighten it, replace the one piece of smashed tube, sandblast it, and prime it, then coat it with either Herculiner or Monstaliner, or you XXXLiner of choice. Or just rattle can it....

Should be around $200 to blast and powder coat it. It will hold up better than the original coating job if done properly and last longer than anything else at that price point. Bedliner will also work long term if it is first sandblasted, but you wont likely hit that price point for quality materials. Oh yeah, I'm biased (and right) :D
