or valves way out of adjustment?

Mine sounds a bit like a diesel. I also vote for both, as I can hear the exhaust leak if I crawl under the truck while its running, and my valves probably need adjusted. However, I have also noticed that the injectors on these make quite a bit of noise. Not sure if thats a sign that they are bad or what...

Mine does a little...

I love the sound of my 3FE.. I would describe it as a giant typewriter. Clickty/clack. And yes my vales are adjusted. I've had three 3FE engines, and they all sounded this way.

No so much diesel, but a distinct sound. ;)

Lately mine has a diesel-ish sound when in drive but with the brake on and not moving. Gas just a little or pull forward (or put in reverse or park) and it goes away. Seemed to only happen recently (cold weather?).

Ballard Cruiser- Your sound may be an exhaust rattle. I think its usually the heat sheilds on the cats that rattle when in drive and stopped. Like at a drive through or something. Thats what mine does at least. Thought I'd throw it out there. :)

I've heard this from a 3FE, but it was coming from the bottom of the engine and only noticeable at idle. Valve lash sounds (to me) like a tick tick tick but not diesel-y, worn main bearings or a bad connecting rod/wrist pin sounds like a knock knock knock, IME. Does a higher viscosity oil change the sound?

Noisey fuel injectors is my vote. Mine sounds the same and I adjusted the valves as soon as I bought it with 160k. Valves were all in spec. Didn't change the noise. Put the handle of a long screw driver to your ear and touch the other end to one of the injectors. You'll immediately hear where the noise is coming from.
