I'd really like to see a pic of the box mounting location, and see how much of the bib needs to be cut away.

TIA

There are quite a few posts with pics already. If you still don't see what you are looking for PM me and I can send you other pics.

common swap these days... one of if not THE best approach.

The bib does not need to be cut at all

unless you have moved your front axle WAY forward... more than5-6 inches

Mark...

No need to cut the bib.
My axle's are forward about 5" because of a spring flip.
Had to trim my inner fenders because of the shock hoops that I used.
But if your rig is stock it should be a pretty straight forward installation.

Mark should know, He started the craze with the install instruction article in the Toyota Trails Mag. back in September '03..... :wrench:

Minitruck PS was barely adequate.

FJ60PS was good.

FJ60 PS w/ hydro assist is better. :D

There are multiple ways to attack nearly every aspect of the conversion.
Some examples- I had to trim the front clip a little, but kept the stock shock tower. Mark W. uses FJ55 parts to link the box to the column, I modified an FJ60 slip shaft and used some aftermarket parts. Some people weld a thick plate to the side of the frame and tap holes in it, others (like myself) box the frame and through-bolt the steering box to it. Some use a mix of FJ40/FJ60 draglink parts, others make custom linkage with DOM and 1 ton TRE's.

All depends on what your intended use is, what parts are available to you etc.

Install can be made to look *like* stock if so desired.

Do a little reading and post up with specific questions if you've got any.

Thanks all, I got what I need. I didn't realize so many had done this. When I first looked at it there was a derth of info on the net, and I dont have the TT magazine everyone refers to.

I now have the Ford shock tower on order and will be working on a box mount this weekend. Is there anything crtical about where the box is positioned, or do you just move it as close to the shock tower as possible?

Figure out the system before you mount it. Get all your parts together first. I mounted my box then got hi-steer. Had interferance issues with drag link to pitman. I had to move the axle foward an inch. Measure twice........

Last pic on page 3 of my build thread shows the mount before I moved the axle foward. The front of the box is up against the radiator support which is moved foward 3/4".

Iruer words were never spoken my friend. I'm going through this conversion right now.Even though I read my keester off and thought that I had lined up all of the parts I forgot to orde the TRE that fit the 60 pitman arm. we went through every iteration described above to try to find something at hand that would work and avoid me ordering parts from the States and sitting on my keester for another three weeks ( it's my DD). Thanks to these guys I will be using a mixture of OEM new 60 series and 70 series TRE hooked to custom DOM pipe. Plain and simple, this stuff was what was available from the dealer or anywhere else here, that would fit and work. In the end it should be kick ass strong. Good luck with your install.

Any chance you have the part number for that TRE that goes in the pitman arm? I just need that and one more piece to get this thing finished.

BTW, what did you guys do with the steering stabalizer? Did you find a way to mount it off of the pitman arm, or just toss it?

Use a 60 stabilizer........

One end mounts as normal on the 60 tre....

Cut the stock 40 frame mount off and weld it to the frame on the right hand side (straight across)......

I don't have a good pic of the location but, you can get the idea from the white pu there on the right........

For me, keeping the pitman arm and draglink as tight to the frame as possible (ie out of the DS leaf spring) was paramount.

I used an FJ80 pitman arm (less drop) for this purpose. Sky manufacturing, amount others make custom pitman arms. Any arm that fits an IFS gear will fit an FJ60 box.

Here are some pics of the HJ61 steering box that i used for my BJ40 ,i am still finishing everything so it will be a few more days before i knows how it drives.

PS i am also putting hydroboost brakes on my 40 while using the original "70" series power steering pump, does anybody have experience with this

There is a insert available that fits the pitman arm so you can use 60 or 80 TRE at the pitman arm. I think they were $6 years ago. It may be worth looking at the 80 pitman arm. Makes for more room by the DS spring as mentioned above.

Your mounting bolts go all the way through the frame, did you sleeve it also?

Ok p/n for this you have two options as I understand with the 60 series steering gear the preference.60 or 70 series:
60 series
End Sub Assy (RH)
45046
(45046-09115)

70 series
End Sub Assy (RH)
45044
(45044-69145

I just bought the 60 stuff today, mostly, I grabbed the upper left hand TRE from a 70 series, even though I'm not sure that we are going to use the upper drag link bits.

I plan on using the 60 stabilizer if I need one.
