Any current options for steering stabilizer / damper / dampener?

Is the Rancho a universal fit?

This is one of those "it depends" deals.:hillbilly:

The RS7415 is a single tube gas pressure unit, so like all of that type, wants to extend, causes a slight pull to the left. A couple of rigs had a pull to the right, so this worked well, but overall the effect is slight, not a big deal. Early results show; it's a damn effective stabilizer, able to soak up a significant amount of tire trauma, out of round/balance issues without steering shake.

The RS5415 is the same application in a twin tube, so slightly less effective, but no steering pull. I'm running a different number (slightly too short) will switch to this number when mine dies.

They both work well, especially when cost and warranty are taken into consideration. We have a good relationship with the vendor, so...

It's not a bolt on deal. One end is "L1" correct for the '80, we put it to the frame bracket, needs the same mount pin as OME, etc (not included in the kit). The other end is a "LS26" has a 12mm sleeve in the bushing. Use a 12mm x ~2.5" bolt and nut with a couple of solid washers to hold it to the drag link. A bit fiddly, but not all of that.

The mount pins are pretty common, we had some laying around from replacing OME units. If needed the Rancho/Monroe P01034 hardware kit is the one needed.

@Tools R Us my rancho came with hardware that looks the same as the P01034. As I was bolting it up, the tapered end that goes thru the tie rod end mounting hole would not go that far. I could thread the castle nut for only about 4-5 turns and thats it. It calls for 35 ft lbs. I think it would torque but would only hold a couple of threads. Is this how you guys are installing it or i need a different mounting kit.

Looks the same and is the same differ? :hillbilly: There are several sizes of those pins, to fit the intended application.

I found the plastic the hardware came with. It says P-837. Wrong hardware I suppose. Is the P01034 supposed to be supplied or its something you buy additionally?

That would depend on the stabilizer that you bought?

The one carid sent me is stamped rs5404 on the shock.

carid.... :hillbilly:

IIRC, that is the number that I have. Compared to a stock one, it's ~2" short and a little short on stroke. Had to flip the frame end bracket, put it on with a bolt and sleeve in the bushing, still lost turn, it's short on stroke. It's normally for a domestic application, don't recall any of the hardware being correct for the '80.

Depending on how the rig is used, the Monroe SC2957 units have worked well, at the price (~$25) not a bad way to get the hardware?

Thanks tools. I thought it would be plug and play like the ome ones. Are the monroe sc2957s plug n play or needs to be modified to work?

Plug and play, bolts on the same way as the OME.

Trying to revamp my steering. Who else is running the cheapo Monroe stabilizer you can get on amazon?

Thoughts? Opinions? The OME/Dobinsons equivalent is about 3x the cost, struggling to understand how they would provide any additional benefit.

My truck has an OME that is way over 12 years old and still working. S for benefits, I had run the truck without one and I have not noted any difference.

How do you know it’s still working if there is no difference?

I have been running the Monroe for at least 10yrs. I have had to replace it once as it started leaking, but since I bought it at O'riellys with a lifetime warranty they swapped it for free for me last time. I have no complaints at all. I think having all your TRE's, knuckles, etc. all in good working order is far more important than a good stabilizer.

OME, Dobinson and King’s Stabilizers are stiffer then OEM or OEM replacement, they are ment for heavier rigs with bigger tires on rougher roads. It means when you hit a big rock off-road it jerks your steering wheel a lot less than then OEM stabilizer.

If your use cases are road and some mild dirt roads then OEM level stabilizers are just fine. If you go off-road with bigger tires on trails with bigger rocks then I would suggest got for at least OME version if not the king’s version. My King’s stabilizer really smoothes out the rocky trails and even on the road it gives a tighter feel.

Edit: never seen a Dobinson anything in person.

Because I have two trucks, one with OME, the other with factory stabilizer, both been on/off road.
