Hey Shotgun-what size tube did you use for the swingouts? Is that 1.5" 11ga? Also what did you decide on the spindles & tubes? Sorry for all the questions, hoping to start my kit soon...

The lower tubes are 3/16" and the upper part (that holds the tire) is 11ga.

cool. Mark was sayin a 220V Mig with gas would be a minimum requirement for this kit. did you experience any problems with penetration (lol) or proper heat?

None whatsoever. The Millermatic 250 (it's an older model) is a 220v welder and did just fine. You just have to experiment a little to get the Voltage/Wire Speed right for the 1/4" plate.

You just have to make sure that you only weld 2-3" at a time and move around so you keep the warping down.

I did my whole bumper, and two sets of sliders with a Millermatic 140 (110v) and everything has held together fine. I just did two or three passes for each weld. Penetration was not a problem.

Desperation is the mother of invention. :wrench::clap:

lol. Use what ya got I guess. The thing is rated for 3/8", so I wasn't too far off. It helps that it's a good quality welder and I had my father-in-law (who is a certified welder of some sort) come over and help make sure my junk was burned together correctly.

Yah and it's not like it's a motor mount or crossmember or anything that could seriously wreck you if one of the welds failed.

^ yeah.. unless you're towing a huge load and your self-welded hitch lets loose..

Not gonna happen. Not sure if you can see just how many places that thing is welded and the gussets I installed, but it's impossible for it to let go unless something rips all 12 grade 8 bolts out of the frame, in which case I have bigger things to worry about than a trailer disconnecting.;)

After a bumper sabbatical, I'm back to it! Started on the swingouts tonight. I'll eventually have a tire carrier on the DS and a jerry can holder on the PS.
Here's some pics of tonights progress.

That looks really great, I've been following along here for awhile. What is that thing welded to the center above the receiver?
bottom pic.

That would be super easy to do. I would build a custom rear cross member to replace the factory (most likely rotten) cross member. It would bolt to the same spots as the rear bumper mounting brackets. Then attach the witch to that custom cross member. Give me some design time and I could come up with something. PM if interested.

It's been a few days since I posted. I've only been able to get a few hours into the bumper due to work, but I did get one side all welded up! On to the jerry can holder, then lots of grinding....Pardon the goober welds. If anybody feels I need to add some strength, feel free to pipe up! My main idea was to keep the tire tight to the truck and at a bit of an angle while still being able to see out the rear window and see the tailight from behind.
Whattcha think? it's my first, so it's certainly not perfect, but I like the placement.
