I dont know about any manufactures ideas.....I like to build my own mods and keep my $ in my pockets. and how is the hub upside down??????most hubs are run horizonal......... I have had mine for a while now too and have had no problem with water or wear!!!
only the uncertain would reply.:flipoff2:
P.S.
I got the spindle idea from an army issue custom H1 that my brother in law drove in IRAQ...........I can only assume the army knows best for strong ideas that would last in a harsh environment.....?

I used a trailer spindle for mine (which looks a heck of a lot like most rear bumpers for these trucks) and I wish I'da gone with the IPOR setup. That's what I would do if I were you.

Either that or a REALLY big trailer spindle.

Edit: Mine flexes a bit, that's the reason for the comment.

I have a quick question for you Alaska60. How do you do the bends on your bumper? Do you own a metal brake? I just want to know, in case I want to add some side protection down the road.

Edit: Rover67 Thanks for the heads up. I still have a while before I get to the point where I need to order spindles, so I do some research and see what the best bang for the buck is.

Why would you ever not have the swing outs on the bumper?

My truck won't fit in my garage with the swing outs installed, so they come off between trips and the tire goes either in the back or underneath. I made covers from some pipe to protect the spindles when the swing outs are not installed.

which bends are you refering too.
Most of the bends on my bumper are cut plates welded together to look like bends and then ground down smooth.

heres a link to an album of the bumper if you need it for any copy stuff or any useful ideas that you may need....I am always happy and willing to share ideas for FREE! the way this forum should be.

I really like how Tom's hubs are pointed down. Makes way more sense when you want to remove the gates somewhat frequently, in my opinion anyway.

I'm going with tube for my rear bumper so none of this applies to me anyway:lol:

Good luck AKcruiserfreak!

Ahhh, I see! I was just looking at your side protection bends.
Thanks

Hey Alaska did you use a 120v welder for your bumper?

Got another hour and a half on the Cruiser tonight. The rear crossmember got in my way, so it went bye-bye. Definitely a little harder to remove than I expected.:o
I am going to hopefully re-use the receiver that was on the rig, just place it higher and between the frame rails. We will see this weekend how that idea pans out.
Here's a pic of tonight's progress.

What kind of reciever did you have- been looking at sticking one on under the stock bumper. I have a small one now but want to stick a 2 inch one under there. Most that I have found are not universal in fit. Thanks

Texas, Not sure if our question was directed at me or Alaska60, but I use a 110v welder.

surffj62, I'll see if I can find some brand markings for you tonight. I'm pretty sure this was a generic fit receiver though. They had to use spacers to clear the frame rivets, and it stuck out about 4" from the stock rear bumper.

Got a couple of hours on the Cruiser today. Got as far as I can before trying to mock-up the receiver. So far so good! I had to have the wife come out and help with the Hi-Lift jack to push the frame apart enough to start welding, but other than that, it's been painless.
Here's some pics.

I got about 3 hours on the Cruiser today. I spent most of that time trying to figure out how to mount the receiver into the bumper. I think it will work fine and be plenty strong. Unfortunately I mounted it a little too low. It's gonna make fabrication a little more fun than I wanted, but oh well, I really wanted it as low as possible on the frame so I don't have to use a 12" drop hitch.

Let me know if I'm bugging y'all with too many updates. I'll cut it back if so.

Updates don't bother me. It is cool to see the progression.

Lookin good! Keep it up!

you might want to get a heavy shipping blanket or some cardboard to sheild your painted surfaces from the welding.... don't start a fire though.. :)

they do make a "welding blanket" for this but I don't know how much $$.

I'm no fabricator, but make sure you are adding the proper reinforcement and rigidity if removing the crossmember, I realize that some of the bumpers require modifying or even removing the rear crossmember.
