can you xray welds or something similar... like how they inspect airplane wings for cracks and stuff (prohibitivly expensive i bet)

from what i've heard, for welds to be passed for scrutineering in australia, you need your welding ticket/ qualifications

I am still confused, not arguing.

When you say "fixed point" are you refering to all of the places that an item that is not part of the vehicles frame is connected to the frame?

Like the gussets that tie the cage to the frame, where the shackle hangers attach to the frame, etc?

All of that has to be bolted on?

Sorry for the hijack Woody, I just don't get it ???

If I'm not mistaken I think Poser is talking about recovery hard points (Those D-ring things, and towhooks) that you would attach your tow stap/winch too in order to un-stuck someones truck.
Correct Steve??

Jomama, yer correct. The event held yearly in Dresser (http://www.memorial4x4.org) has some "odd" requirements for passing tech...one of which is the bolted not welded stipulation. An aftermarket welded bumper manufactured by some company is ok, but an identical homemade bumper will fail. Stupid rule, one that causes LOTS of problems. I can understand their concern about "backyard welding" but even items done by local professional shops get failed.

Needless to say, I know plenty of people who weld bolt heads on...not that I would do that...it at least "appears" bolted then....lol

...Now, to toss more crap on the fire, my old welded double steering arm on my Cruiser never failed inspection....tho they did tell me to tighten my heim joints on the drag link once.

Again, dumb rules.

To continue what Woody was saying, And I believe it was the same weekend he is refering to, The purchased hitch that is on the rear of my 40 did not pass the first time. With a lot of heated disscusson and getting the head dude involved, they finally passed it. The thing that chaps my Ass about it was seeing all of the full tube chassis vehicles that weekend that passed. As if they haven't noticed it's quite difficult to assembly a tube chassis by bolting it together.

Niner-

Having been working that event since '92, and in the klub that hosts it since '91, I understand your point about the fabricated tube chassis, and again, as I stated in my first paragraph, have pointed this out to the tech people, and not been at the least acknoledged for having a valid point.

Nolan-

'hard point'= recovery mounting gear location, ie, tow hook, or clevis mounting point. Does not have anything to do with suspension, spring hangers or the like.

One last note on this-

Liability insurance plays a lot larger role in this than what many people think. I have seen the deadly effects first hand of what happens when rigging gear is under tension, and something lets loose. I hope that none of you ever get to.

Good luck!

-Steve

It is easy to say that it causes lots of problems, but how many trips to the hospital, and or morgue has it saved in thirty-plus years?

What would you suggest is done to distinguish the difference between a back yard welder, and a pro for inspection purposes at this, or any event?

Now you need to do the front ;)

By the same token, this is the only event I'm aware of with this in their tech inspection form...how is it all these other events don't require it?

Additionally, the same rules don't apply to steering arms, pitman arms, suspension mount points, roll cages, seat belt tabs, and a pile of other items....all of those are safety items which in certain circumstances could result in injury.

As you noted, there is no consistency in the rule.

The problem is, you can't pass laws that participants must have common sense...we both know the booty-fab projects running around the MidWest now! lol

Can I see some more 4 link pics, please?

I agree.

also could you tell us if your links are going to be adjustable top and bottom?and i want to know if you had considered the new fox shocksthat billa vista just did write up on in pirate as they seem like there a great deal selling around $250 apiece

I opted to not go adjustable...thought about it, played with the idea, finally decided to bite the bullet and believe in my calculations.

I DO really like those fox shocks....considered those, but mounting would have required a tub mod I wasn't mentally ready for yet....also, the "goal" of this project is budgetperformance, and I believe by the time I'm all done, I'll be right around $500 tops.

Finally, I'm a firm believer in matching front and rear suspensions....I'm torn enough with the 1/2 ellipticals up front and the 1/4 setup in the rear, but at LEAST it's all leaf packs! lol

4000 lb rig is a bit too heavy for the current fox nitrogen shocks..

Only if that's 4000 lbs of SPRUNG weight. if he's 4000 lbs total, it's probably 3000 sprung, or about 75% of the shock's capacity?

Woody, the rig looks killer, the bumper and spring hangers in particular caught my eye as I have similar plans for the front end of my 40. What did you do at the shackle end of the spring? I've seen some people drill & sleeve a new mounting hole through the frame then run the upper shackle bolt through the new mounting hole; I'm primarily concerned about pinion angles.

Thanks Gus....have another set of unfinished front spring hangers in the shop, measured the wrong bushines the first time and they ended up 1/8" too narrow! lol

Nolen, I'm pathetic, and haven't touched it in over a week. Hope to get a night out there this week, but have another project that keeps taking my time...lol Hopefully, either Wed or Thurs night and most of Sat...."might" even have it in a near-done condition! (sans paint...er, Rustoleum! lol)

well, another day of shop time...it's amazing what can be done when yer not spending yer time screwing around with a dysfunctional webhost! lol

Pic one of the frame-side mount for the 1/4 ellip packs. 6 leaves plus the overload. Hop on the rear bumper and my "skinny" 200# easily gets 'er bounding a couple inches, softer than the stockers.
