Greetings all,
Anyone know where I can find Ambulance (barn) doors for an FZJ-80?

Best,
Winslow

i have never seen one in the US. i wish there was a retro fit.

Good luck

In my driveway? I'm sorry that's not helpful, but there are plenty of them here in Australia, not sure but freight might be a project killer...

I was going to say, you can probably find lots of them if you get on a plane and head Down Under, or to the Homeland....
You could probably even pay enough to put them back on the plane with you....

But seriously, I have never even seen any running around Canada. If I had a bunch of $$ burning a hole in my pocket, and absolutely had to have them.
I would start by calling, Radd Cruisers (Mud member Radd), G&S Cruisers (Mudd member 70sGuy), Crushers (mud member), Or J Cruisers JDM Parts & Imports in BC Canada (I dont think they are Mud members)

Good luck, it would be cool to have. Although, I grew up in Suburbans, my family has been driving them since the 80's. There are 2 in the driveway as I type. (Actually, to think of it, there are 2 in every driveway of my immediate family- on two continents). My folks had ONE with Barn doors, and it was agreed that it was THE WORST set up ever. Think about what you currently do if you want to put something longer in the back. You leave one of the gates open, and it just hangs out. With Barn Doors, they have to be tied, or bungee corded, or some other silly system to keep them from swinging...

Just my $.02.

Doug

No thanks, tailgate/hatch is superior, IMHO. Ambulance doors would be a downgrade, for most.

As mentioned they were never available in North America, only option would be from an imported 80, or getting some from overseas. IIRC, in previous discussions, there was a difference in the rear body as well, to accommodate the doors.

No problem, just import a whole rig or body shell that has them.

...

^^^ Agree.

All they do is reduce rear visibility, reduce potential rear surface area and make it more difficult to load long items that stick out the back.

Just because the 'hardy third-world trim levels' of the 80-series has it and our 'pigfat luxury 'murican 80-series' don't, does not mean that the former's is superior.

Why do you want them? - the only possible reason I see they are useful is if the tailgate gets in the way of getting to your gear - but even then that's a pretty big stretch to me.

I personally love having a place to sit with a hooch over my head like our USA 80's came - my personal preference. I may be like every other 80 in the States, but that better than having barn doors to me.

Plus, I've never looked close enough - but you might have to buy the rear clip to get the hinge mounts, and weld that into the rear cabin area - have you looked to see if the mounts are there already for the hinges, and if not are you prepared to do the work / pay a welder just to make it happen?

I dunno. With the ambulance back I like being able to quickly open the small door for fast access and that the tire carrier is integrated into the large door. With the over under hatch you have that extra step to swing out the spare.

^^ This.

My friend's BJ74 has the ambulance doors with the integrated rear tire carrier. Handy.

One of the only things stopping me (other than co$t) from putting on rear swingouts is the extra hassle to open the rear hatch. Right now, to drop small stuff in the back I pop the hatch and toss it in. With swingouts, I'd have to open the latch, swing out both sides, then pop the hatch.

With ambulance doors, the carrier would be integrated on the door.

I'm not saying I'm a fan of unobtanium, just that it could be handy...

I think it would be pretty cool to see a 80 with ambulance doors in North America, would be costly but very unique over here. Do it.
